That same year, a study in Royal Society Open Science collected tiny shrimp-like creatures from six of the deepest ocean trenches, including from almost 7 miles down. 72% of them had microplastics (broken-down bits of plastic, smaller than a grain of rice) in their stomachs. A separate Chinese Academy of Sciences study found up to 2,200 microplastic particles per liter of Mariana Trench mud. One liter is roughly the size of a large water bottle. In 2025, researchers published results in Nature from nearly 2,000 ocean sampling spots collected over ten years. Microplastics showed up at every depth, including the Mariana Trench. The researchers called it a "plastic smog" that runs throughout the entire ocean, from the surface to the bottom. Only 27 people have ever been to Challenger Deep, and over 600 have been to space. I keep thinking about that gap. About 11 million tonnes of plastic enter the ocean each year, roughly 2,000 garbage trucks' worth dumped in every single day, and only 1% of it floats. The other 99% sinks. Some of it ends up almost 7 miles down, inside animals that have never seen sunlight, in water so isolated it hasn't circulated back to the surface in about 2,000 years.
