Major Duncan is a great example of the difference between dishonor and moral failing. Honor is something distinct from morality and ethics; this is why a sin or a moral offense may be forgiven, but dishonor may only be redeemed. Recovering your honor once it's been lost requires the most extreme action to redeem it, which is precisely what Duncan does when he offers himself to save Hawkeye and Cora. Though he had dishonored himself earlier on and spend most of the movie as a scumbag, his act of selfless heroism at the end redeems him and he dies an honorable man.
