@lbm728 @mactellomckeown Presumably you recognized him as such because he was holding his application paperwork in one hand, and had a deflated dinghy over the opposite shoulder. Shrewd an observer as you are, you probably find all sorts of hidden codes in paintings.

This dark woke "British values are actually liberal" shit doesn't work when almost every Scottish seat wants lower immigration. The public doesn't agree with you, and this half hearted, mealy-mouthed attempt at being politically incorrect doesn't change that

henry@leap_dog

clearly Q Manivannan has integrated much better in our society than you then as they understand that we let immigrants participate politically in the society in which they live. stop trying to import your greek values.

@boreddeleuzian I think it's great if people are reading books the way they like. On the other hand it's funny to do that *and* engage in public boasting about how many books you read, mostly because of how odd the latter hobby is!

@Benthamsbulldog I think what's harsh is simultaneously personalizing and trivialising the standard disagreement between EA people and people with a structural-political worldview.

This may have been phrased too harshly. To be clear, Greta seems like a nice person with moral conviction. I think this attitude towards activism where you don't care much about doing the most good isn't unique to Greta--it's mistaken, but pretty widespread.
Bentham's Bulldog🔸@Benthamsbulldog

I think Greta Thunberg's worldview is a bit silly, in that she believes that climate change will kill Earth but decided to shift her activism to other issues.

@MegaOraDominus @mactellomckeown Oh don't worry I know the majority want lower immigration. My point is just that that attitude is concentrated in the mud zone where they put their hands into cows arses. I simply don't care about those people.

@DoctorCrazyac @suchnerve You're right that I was thinking of all AC systems, not just heat pumps. But conservation of energy, thermodynamics etc have no relevance to the discussion: one can also reflect the energy out into space where we don't care about the entropy or energy.

@TimHenke9 @turboblitzzz Also I'm pretty sure they have mathematicians employed to check and rewrite the proof. I wonder how much slop outputs they had to filter out and how much time that used!

@turboblitzzz We have no idea how much it cost until they reveal how many problems they were trying in parallel If they one-shot this, that's huge. If they were just spamming counterexamples to big conjectures until they inevitably found one, that doesn't even take AI

@intentionalisms It's also quite funny how they reason by analogy with previous technological disruptions, when the whole sales pitch of "AI" is to replace humans in every job, including the ones yet to be invented!

@mactellomckeown There's no key on this, but to me it clearly looks like the significant urban areas have low levels of agreement, with some exceptions in the midlands and north east. The very dark green is all muck though isn't it?

@cryptosocdem You can literally see that almost every urban area wants lower immigration, including the majority of Europe's only majority minority city, Leicester

@AladdinRain @teeinapot @icuselle I think in this case there are good sources that it had been clearly separate from the base for 10 years. I'm not sure I'd call disguising oneself as civilians is using human shields: that is the war crime of 'perfidy'. Imo 'human shields' should be reserved mostly for hostages.

@cryptosocdem @teeinapot @icuselle Minab's case is a bit different because apparently it was always adjacent to an IRGC base? Like, as a default, and not a dirty measure during wartime. But I can't speak confidently about it, because in Iran we've heard so many contradictory tales about this specific school.

@worst_account @AntimutualistA Surely a great deal of reasoning can be done without empirically testing its premises; it just won't tell us about the world. E.g. I can suppose that animals absorb colours from their surroundings by osmosis and explain the colour of snow leopards. How much biology did I do?

Mises on the fundamental truths of economics being a priori is maybe the ultimate example of a claim that few people would disagree with until you say it explicitly and draw out the implications.

@pjharpy @no_earthquake Yes which is why the original tweet is a good thing -- with sufficient attention to this problem it can be solved, but not without! (Though I do worry about the burden of constantly disclosing this information, a non-trivial cost)

@cryptosocdem @no_earthquake The solution to your "problem" is literally a simple "tell me if you use a screen reader, so that I can make sure all assignments and texts are compatible" added to the syllabus and said to the class at the beginning of the semester.

@vjoshuaadams I think it depends a lot on contest. It could mean very different things in a debate club (or a website dedicated to discourse...) vs an activist group.

@no_earthquake I don't think people should stop this kind of thing, but I do think it's good to remind people about screenreaders when it comes up because lots of academics are clueless. I think these hidden things have to be carefully designed.

@no_earthquake In the case I'm thinking of it got quite complicated; I'm not sure if there was a previous official record that the student used a screenreader, and I think we should be trying to minimise the beauraucratic hurdles for people who need accessible assesments.

@cryptosocdem Well the nice thing about powering heat pumps with solar panels is that the net amount of heat added to ambient air is approximately the same as if you hadn’t done anything at all, thanks to the laws of thermodynamics. Solar panels cool ambient air; heat pumps warm ambient air.

@suchnerve I was more thinking about the fact that you're sort-of blowing hot air at your neighbour, or you and your neighbour are blowing hot air at people walking down the street. But I have no idea if that is significant given that the atmosphere is... quite large lol

@cryptosocdem Not to an extent significant enough to be worth mass human suffering, especially since heat pumps’ electricity consumption peaks at the same time as solar panels’ output (solar noon) - which makes their energy usage relatively easy to offset.

@AlexRageAndLove @suchnerve Well if we used things like coatings which re-radiate the heat in frequencies where the atmosphere is relatively transparent, we could increase the entropy of the fixed stars, not the local high street!
