The sad thing isn’t that Google abandoned “don’t be evil,” because that’s what big companies do. What’s sad is watching decent engineers put those plans into practice, while pretending they don’t know what’s happening.

This goes back decades: bragging about hosting a BBS on some cobbled-together hot mess of a machine was a thing back then, as well. Mostly harmless, & simply an affectation many of us picked up back when hardware cost vast $$ & thus making do w/ cheap allowed humans to use tech.

@matthew_d_green Less than 10 years ago Aaron Swartz was bullied into suicide for trying this. It would be an amazing time for him to be alive.

Also when the hell did 10TB drives get so cheap? I’m staring at Amazon wondering if this is a typo.

For $203 and some bandwidth costs you can download and personally store every scientific paper ever written and scanned into Sci-Hub. Who says this isn’t an amazing time to be alive.
