Zeros can have unintentional effects on student grades when used w/ the percentage scale & averaging. Take a look at the 1st q. learning progressions of 3 Ss below. Does the final grade match their holistic learning level? (Hint: notice their learning trajectories)

Thoughts on the "homework pass": 1) Is the homework really necessary in the first place? 2) If the practice is important for their learning, why give them a pass not to do it? 3) Rewards that exempt students from learning send the wrong message about the learning.

Really intrigued by this approach! It emphasizes the importance of practice in the learning process and as a necessary component in being ready for the "game" (i.e. the summative assessment)
Dr. Josh Kunnath@JoshKunnath

My grades are created 100% from summative assessment, so I don’t use grades to penalize Ss for late or missing practice. Instead, I address undesirable behaviors w/ communication & restorative practices. Here's the email I sent today to parents of Ss missing an important practice

A %-based grading system is inaccurate & unreliable. At best, it's incomplete - % score doesn't account for the type of error made. At worst, when making an indirect scoring inference, it's unreliable - the margin of error among teachers is typically +/- 5-6 points. #ATAssessment

Q3: What tools do you use or tips can you share about getting Ss and parent buy-in early in the year? (Feel free to share videos, letter examples...) #flipclasschat #flipclass
