Swallowed by the news. I published a post on Substack about the Pope Leon XIV slavery apology with a brief context of previous apologies, about which I wrote in 2010. Link in the next post #slaveryarchive

And this means we must rethink and transform our pedagogy instead of endlessly levying indictments against students and AI. We, academia itself, must adapt, evolve, and recalibrate to the realities before us, or we will render ourselves obsolete.
Science Magazine@ScienceMagazine

Higher education must rethink assessment practices in response to the growing integrity challenges posed by generative #AI, argue the authors of a new #SciencePolicyForum. scim.ag/49fG3Pc

I appreciate the precision of her response. We need academics and historians who are unafraid and unapologetic in identifying the gaps we have normalized and permitted to persist within our own spheres of influence.
Ana Lucia Araujo, PhD@araujohistorian

Today's Pope encyclical says nothing about the Catholic Church responsibility in supporting slavery and owning slaves, it's a rambling about AI and modern forms of servitude. AI statement is important, but mixing up the 2 things is, as we say in French, de la poudre aux yeux.

Academics would rather destroy a form of technology that could help cure cancer (AI) because it allows a couple of their students to cheat on their essay… What’s more important???

Just when I thought I had heard it all, I realized I had not. Pet, you were fired for stealing office supplies. Six laptops and a portable Xerox machine later, I do not believe you will be mowing my lawn ever again. I mustn’t forget to see how impressed I was with his transparency.

Of course he would. AI appears to possess more ethical consistency and moral restraint than the pontiff and the sin-riveted institution he represents. Perhaps the real conversation should be about disarming the RCC instead.
Financial Times@FT

Pope Leo has called for AI to be 'disarmed' through robust regulation and limits on its use for warfare, as he warned of the dangers of a technological revolution driven by 'the idolatry of profit'. ft.trib.al/oLlpqvF

Rakeem Shabazz | Wise The Dome TV
Tune in NOW as I build with Hotep History. In this episode of Wise the Dome TV, we explore the hidden intellectual and spiritual world of Black America during slavery and Jim Crow. The conversation covers powerful slave narratives, the fight for Black education, Hoodoo traditions, forgotten historical figures, and the brilliance that existed within the minds of the enslaved despite the systems designed to suppress them. For the full build hit the link in bio or comments.

I give my fellow Jews no historical pass on slavery. Moral consistency demands the courage to examine one’s own community with the same severity applied to others. Segments of the Portuguese Jewish community of Amsterdam, the Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue tradition, Congregation Shearith Israel, Mikvé Israel-Emanuel Synagogue, Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim, Neveh Shalom Synagogue, Touro Synagogue, and the Jewish community of Recife existed within and benefited from colonial economic systems sustained by enslaved human labor. The historical record is neither erased nor absolved by later achievements, suffering, or victimhood elsewhere in Jewish history. Human bondage remained human bondage regardless of who profited from it. The blood, degradation, and generational suffering tied to slavery do not disappear because participation was uncomfortable to acknowledge. Historical integrity requires that we confront complicity honestly, without tribal exemptions, selective memory, or moral evasiveness.

The Pope’s apology should not be mistaken for an extraordinary act of moral courage worthy of celebration. Do we praise a thief who ridded us of our property? Do we praise a murderer who unalived our beloved ones? Do we celebrate those who disrupted our progress and promotion? Human dignity was never a privilege to be granted at the convenience of religious or political authorities; it was an obligation that institutions knowingly violated while claiming moral supremacy. The historical record is unambiguous: the Catholic Church was not alone in this complicity. Anglican, Protestant, Baptist, and numerous other Christian institutions participated directly and indirectly in the architecture of slavery, colonial exploitation, and racial domination. Their scriptures and their egomaniacal god were repeatedly invoked to rationalize bondage, their pulpits often defended systems of human degradation, and their silence frequently legitimized atrocities that should have provoked uncompromising condemnation. It is therefore intellectually dishonest to isolate one denomination while absolving others that benefited from the same machinery of oppression. What deserves scrutiny is not merely what these institutions proclaimed in moments of public reflection, but what they normalized, financed, protected, and sanctified over generations. Hollow declarations and emotional performances cannot substitute for historical accountability. The issue is not whether apologies are spoken, but whether institutions possess the integrity to confront the full weight of their inheritance through transparency, restitution, structural reform, and an honest reckoning with the wealth and authority accumulated through exploitation. Societies do themselves no service by lowering moral expectations for institutions that claimed divine authority while accommodating inhumanity. We owe far more to the generations whose suffering made modern prosperity possible than ceremonial remorse designed to preserve institutional legitimacy. History demands precision, honesty, and standards far above mediocrity. Let’s start with accountable summons of the major denominations whose gold teeth were purchased by and through slavery: Anglican Church Southern Baptist Convention Methodist Episcopal Church, South Presbyterian Church Dutch Reformed Church Lutheran Church Congregational Church Religious Society of Friends Episcopal Church Moravian Church
