We always searched for a “solana cult” but never came up with something official I found an OG dev-team cult which was supposed to be brought to the public but disagreements within the team caused their breakdown It was called “Purpleheads”, led by key SOL figures including Toly. I technically managed to cto this. Using “vibe-code an archive posts website” I tracked the Twitter of one of the participants, Stephen Akridge (co-founder, former Qualcomm engineer), “his tag” (reg a fake acc and get 500 subs) Not only did he respond but we even had a decent talk. He literally said that if their first concept for Solana stayed the same the ecosystem would be 10x more efficient. Welcome to $PURPLE All proofs below 👇

Purpleheads today Today, Akridge still holds a minor advisory role at Solana Labs but is no longer listed as a core contributor on the official site. To my personal surprise Akridge was found very friendly and we had an awesome talk in his Twitter dm’s. The cover-up, removing purple: Solana's public marketing shifted to a cleaner narrative: "a beach in San Diego, three friends building the future." The purple lanyards disappeared. The closed meetings stopped. Akridge's public presence declined significantly — he stopped attending conferences and gave fewer interviews. When pressed about Solana's early culture in a 2021 podcast, co-founder Greg Fitzgerald laughed and said: "That's ancient history. We were kids."

More lore about the “cult”: By late 2019, internal tensions grew. The Purpleheads structure, once praised as efficient, became a liability Accusations emerged that Akridge had prioritized technical purity over community growth, rejecting qualified engineers based on subjective judgments. Former employees claim that at least seven highly skilled engineers were dismissed from the process due to Akridge's "elitist" approach — some went on to build competing projects. The deletion of hundreds of private Slack messages in early 2020 suggests a deliberate effort to erase the Purpleheads paper trail. Archive X data confirms that Akridge's personal account was among the first to purge its history.

Stephen Akridge's main X account — @stephakridge__ — was quietly deleted sometime between December 2021 and January 2022. The exact date is unclear because Solana Labs requested its removal following a private legal consultation regarding "reputational exposure". On archiveposts.com they mentioned two accounts, one of which is supposingly was his secondary account. Posts and how I contacted Akridge: Using the archiveposts.com you can find posts mentioning Purpleheads on X (formerly Twitter) that were later deleted. In one, Akridge writes: "When you see purple, you know the chain is alive." This was posted on February 14, 2018 — exactly four days before Solana's first testnet went live. archiveposts.com/details/6a5eab…

Back to “Purpleheads” and the name origination: By early 2018, "Purplehead" had become an internal identity marker. Employees and early contributors who proved their technical worth were unofficially called "purpleheads" which was sort of a badge of honor. The mentions are seen in old reddit posts: Can find more at reddit.com/r/solana/

Akridge wasn't just a co-founder. He was the lead engineer, with 10 years of GPU optimization experience at Qualcomm and Intel. Akridge personally tested everyone who sought entry into the circle using technical challenges as initiation rituals. Those who failed were filtered out. Purpleheads was a closed order of engineers, and Akridge was its chief gatekeeper.

The name Solana comes from a San Diego beach where co-founders Anatoly Yakovenko, Greg Fitzgerald, and Stephen Akridge spent time surfing and discussing blockchain. But the inner circle called themselves something else. Purpleheads. The color wasn't random. In 2017-2018, as the project was just emerging, these three former Qualcomm engineers formed a closed community with its own symbolism, rituals, and hierarchy. At the center stood Stephen Akridge — the man who made Solana possible through GPU optimization, but whose role in the "cult" dynamic remained hidden for years.
