How did Sabastian Sawe fuel during his 1:59:30 marathon world record?
The Maurten team has shared his fueling plan.
The Maurten research team was embedded with Sawe’s team in Kenya for 32 days across six trips between last and this April. They were training his gut to absorb that load by mimicking race-day protocol in training. The hydrogel technology they have developed over the past 10 years now allows athletes to absorb 90–120 grams of carbs per hour without GI distress. In addition to that, sodium bicarbonate is also used, essentially a blood buffer since it neutralizes the lactic acid buildup that causes the burning sensation in muscles during high-intensity effort.
Sawe used both of Maurten’s products for it on race day. Taking the bicarb early is deliberate since it peaks in the bloodstream roughly 60–90 minutes after ingestion, so the timing of 2+ hours before the race would put peak buffering capacity right at the start.
Sawe told the media in the press conference that he had two pieces of bread and tea with honey as his breakfast before the race.

Des Linden has been pretty busy this April.
On Sunday, Linden averaged 7:02 per mile to run 3:04:24 at the London Marathon while pacing a friend, capping off a total of 220 miles of racing this month. Six days prior, she ran 2:35:49 to finish 30th in the women's division at the Boston Marathon, and a week before Marathon Monday, Linden completed the six-stage, 168-mile Marathon des Sables through the Sahara Desert.

For those wondering if we can trust this new 1:59:30 marathon world record by Sabastian Sawe since there have been so many Kenyan runners caught doping and using performance-enhancing drugs in recent years...it’s always hard to have 100% certainty, but credit to Sabastian Sawe, his agency and his sponsor (adidas) for doing their best to be transparent.
Some context for folks: Adidas included a budget in Sawe's contract to provide funds to the sport’s anti-doping organization (the Athletics Integrity Unit) of about $50,000 to test him. Basically, they wanted to prove he was clean, as there was growing confidence that he would break the marathon world record of 2:00:35 set in 2023 by the late Kelvin Kiptum. They also wanted to avoid the doubt of Ruth Chepngetich breaking the women’s marathon world record in 2:09:56…and then having that skepticism validated when she tested positive for a banned substance.
Sawe was reportedly drug-tested 25 times (this included blood and urine) in the space of two months in the lead-up to last fall's Berlin Marathon and that’s a pretty high number. He was not tested as frequently before this race but his coach Claudio Berardelli confirmed that the Athletics Integrity Unit sets the testing regimen and that he is on a higher frequency of testing than other athletes in 2026 because of the additional funding being provided.

OMG. 🇰🇪 Sabastian Sawe becomes the first man ever to break 2 hours in a marathon (legal conditions) in 1:59:30 at the London Marathon! Yomif Kejelcha 🇪🇹 runs 1:59:41 in his DEBUT. Jacob Kiplimo 🇺🇬 takes third in 2:00:28 All under the previous WR.

We have no words 😦
After going out in a shade under 2:01 pace for the first half — on track for a time only Kelvin Kiptum had ever managed — Sabastian Sawe absolutely dropped the hammer over the last 13.1 miles in London this morning.
His 5️⃣9️⃣:0️⃣1️⃣ split for the second half of his world record run is the fastest half marathon ever run inside a full marathon. It would also rank just outside the 10 fastest half marathons run in the world so far in 2026 🤯

WHAT A DEBUT 🤩
Yomif Kejelcha lives up to the pre-race hype and then some, running 1:59:41 for his first ever marathon to finish second in London behind newly-minted world record holder Sabastian Sawe.
Kejelcha and Sawe pushed each other to the first two official sub-2 hour performances in history, and Kejelcha split 60:29-59:12 en route to becoming the second fastest ever at his new distance.
