The state’s judicial commission found that he violated the Code of Judicial Conduct and is recommending only a public reprimand, which he has agreed to accept, while allowing him to remain on the bench. So the result is this: the system agrees his words were wrong, but is still asking Black defendants to trust a judge who sees “chopped cotton” as a way to “straighten up” a Black woman standing before him.
