also, Robert Quine played the amazing freaked-out guitar solo on "Don't Work That Hard." cool how these little shades of downtown NYC avant-gardism made it onto a pop album so slick and so British via Maher's involvement

a cool thruline between the Scritti Politti piece and an earlier Sunday Review I wrote of a very different album: SP drummer Fred Maher and Sonny Sharrock (whose Ask the Ages I wrote about in 2021) played together in Material. here they are ripping: youtube.com/watch?v=h78HoF…

@cushac I gotta revisit now. Picked up the LP used for like $4 almost 20 years ago, loved it, but it's been ages. Great stuff here Andy

I went long on Scritti Politti's Cupid & Psyche 85, an album of dizzying musical and intellectual complexity that goes down like Coca-Cola, whose uncanny pop songs about pop itself invented a whole new approach to the form that we're still working through 40 years later
Pitchfork@pitchfork

For today's Sunday Review, we're revisiting the ultra slick, deliciously clever record where Scritti Politti deconstructed pop music only to build it back up even better pitchfork.com/reviews/albums…

trying to write music devoid of irony and intellectual inquiry etc would have been the actually cynical move. it would have been dishonest. and i suspect there's a similar dynamic at play w a lot of the PC Music stuff

and for him, the only way to write an honest song was to to make those questions his subject. the obsession with artifice is itself a route toward a kind of authenticity, because the obsession was genuine

@cushac great review, i think you got to the heart of what makes the album tick. review also works as good rejoinder to some of the "sincerity/irony" conversation that's been happening around PC music this past week..

this sequence of posts pretty much sums up Twitter in 2026: annoying Atlantic article > lefty critique > anon troll response > infernal paypig scambot legions assemble

@polanskydj in fact the opposite is true — i put up with the eyesore of records strewn all over my apartment and the physical space demands of storing them because i like listening to them so much

@imbecileperson @ZacharyLipez I have written about my deep love for that album but still strikes me as a wild choice. In any case it seems like the person was under the impression that Sung Tongs was their debut

@ZacharyLipez well with LC it’s at least what I imagine is a fairly commonly held opinion. ‘Spirit, They’re Gone, Spirit They’ve Vanished’ as the definitive Animal Collective LP is avant garde. I have to respect it.
