being catholic is the best because you can step into a church anywhere in the world and feel like you know the secret passcode. its like having status with an airline, but with kneeling.

@nickgillespie one of the most important things conservatives can do to change the culture is promote the western cannon and encourage young people to rediscover the arts. the humanities are incredibly challenging and formational when taught properly.

There is no reason to doubt that Professor George is a good man in many respects. He has mentored a number of leaders that are respected by members of GenZ. But his statement shows why much of the conservative movement has failed to conserve much of anything. Professor George is right that our goal should be to rebuild civic friendship, however, there are some ideologies that are so pathological to society that they must be dismantled and destroyed using the power of institutions. Arguments alone will not convince the Left that young girls should not have phalloplasty surgeries done on them. Stoping that evil requires good men to use the power justly given to them to reestablish order. That does not mean establishing tyranny or a dictatorship or anything like that, but it does mean engaging in statecraft and not resting on beautiful principles while the city burns. Professor George is right that we “don’t need to destroy” our enemies. Professor George says that “Our fellow citizens with whom we disagree are not devils incarnate or personifications of evil.” There have been three assassination attempts on President Trump, Charlie Kirk — the man committed to good faith debate with the Left — was murdered in broad daylight in front of thousands, with the hoards of leftists online cheering it on. What makes this statement when more out of touch is that it comes on the heels of an assassination attempt - once again by a professed leftist. A belief in democracy is predicated on a virtuous citizenry. A political movement that elevates “Pride” is not conducive to a virtuous citizenry - in fact, it’s evil. Transgender ideology is evil. Critical Race Theory and DEI mandates are evil. Abortion is evil. And while we, as Christians, always believe that God’s grace can turn the worst sinner into a saint, we should never fail to identify evil for what it is and wield power to oppose evil things. We should, in fact, will the good of the Leftists (I.e. love them). However, what this love looks like, is wielding power to prevent them from further marring their souls — not to mention our countrymen’s souls — by doing bad and malevolent things in society. Professor George understandably wants to prevent a generation from coming of age — on the left or the right — that seeks not to build but only to destroy. But what Professor George neglects in this statement is the need for order and statecraft. It is a nice sentiment, but politics is not merely a game of “who has the better ideas?” The ivory tower is not the arena. Politics, for the Christian, is an outward expression of charity for our friends and neighbors, and sometimes charity requires the use of power to squash forces hostile to the good of the community.

I'll probably get clobbered for this, but here goes: Please, can everyone, right or left, MAGA or anti-MAGA, Republican or Democrat, stop catastrophizing and trying to get everyone on your side worked up into a rage? It's not Flight 93. We're not on the verge of fascism. We do not need to take desperate measures. Our fellow citizens with whom we disagree are not devils incarnate or personifications of evil. We need to argue with our political adversaries--passionately perhaps--but with respect for their humanity and dignity. We don't need to destroy them. That mustn't be our aim. We all say we believe in democracy. Good! But democracy is all about persuading, giving reasons, engaging one another as fellow citizens, despite our disagreements. Let's rebuild civic friendship. We can do this. (Thank you for your attention to this matter.)

I’m from Baton Rouge. There has been a massive gang problem for years. The Mall of Louisiana was one of the few safe places parents would drop their teenagers off to hang out with friends. It’s now a war zone. Martha Odom could have been anyone. I recognize her last name and I see people I know in her face. We are a small city and care deeply for each other. The people who killed her have no respect for life or how their actions affect others. There are so many teenagers in BR who have lost several friends and killed others before they even reach adulthood. I’m glad Jeff Landry is not mincing words about what a failure this is. My immediate family has been at the scene of shootings in BR. Enough is enough.

Police arrested 17-year-old Markel Lee on Friday for killing high school student Martha Odom at the Mall of Louisiana on Thursday during the mass shooting. Lee, along with his lawyer, turned himself in to police on Friday. Odom reportedly died from a gunshot wound to the chest. She had been at the mall celebrating “Senior Skip Day.” Lee faces one count of first-degree murder and will be charged with five counts of attempted first-degree murder for the other people shot. Baton Rouge Police are asking for help identifying another suspect who was caught on camera (00:08). If you recognize him, please contact the authorities. Police say nobody wants to talk about it but there is a gang problem in Baton Rouge. This mass shooting stemmed from a social media beef between two groups. After they found each other at the food court at the mall, shots rang out. Call them groups or call them gangs—it’s mass violence and it has no place in civil society. Lee deserves life in prison. Gov. Landry blamed his parents, saying, “The beginning of this failure was at home.” He also blamed the judicial system for being too soft on criminals. Lee had a long criminal history already at such a young age. He shouldn’t have been free to harm innocent people. Gov. Landry gave his solution for violent crimes like Thursday’s mass shooting: “People say we cannot arrest our way out of this problem, and they are right. We can sentence our way out of this problem.” Odom deserves to be alive. May she rest in peace and may stricter legal penalties for violent criminals be realized. Another victim from this mass shooting, 43-year-old Donnie Guillory, is in critical condition at a hospital. If he dies, another count of first-degree murder would be added to Lee’s charges. Charlie Kirk was a courageous conservative, and most importantly, a good husband, father, and American. He inspired countless young people to get involved in politics and passionately believed in the right to free speech. His legacy will live on through every freedom-loving American who watched his show, listened to his speeches, or attended one of Turning Point USA’s events. Charlie’s senseless death makes me sick.

Charlie Kirk was more committed to peaceful, open dialogue with those who disagreed with him than anyone I know. God blessed him with immense gifts, and he used them boldly and without fear. He knew the risks he was taking, but he did it anyway because he loved his kids & felt a responsibility to the nation they would inhabit. I traveled the entire country with him last year, we spent 1x1 time together in Ohio two weeks ago, spoke to him again 2 days ago. He’s long warned of the rise of political violence & the growing culture of assassination, when few were willing to listen, with a clarity of vision unlike anyone I’ve known. Completely and utterly devastated.

Like all of you, I am utterly stunned and heartbroken and sick to my soul today. It is unimaginable to write these words. I met Charlie Kirk when he was 18 years old, a young man so eager and determined that I immediately turned to a friend and said, “That kid is going to be the head of the RNC one day.” Charlie became even bigger and more important than that. It was a privilege to watch this principled man stand up for his beliefs and create the single most important conservative political organization in America. But more importantly, Charlie was a good man, a man who believed in right and wrong, who stood by his Biblical values. All of us will miss him, and I can’t imagine the pain of his beautiful young family, and we must all pray for them. And we must pick up the baton where Charlie left it, fighting for the things he believed in so passionately. And we must fight for a better America - an America where good people can speak truth and debate passionately without fear of a bullet. I weep for Charlie’s family, and I weep for my country today. Most of all, I weep for Charlie.
