I was livid with one of my daughters (a millennial) a few days ago, while walking her through the need for introspection, being circumspect and prudent in matters, mindfulness, cultivating a sense of discerning in thoughts, words and action.
A generation that presents strong opinions based on ephemeral feelings as a counter to strong evidence usually doesn’t live long, if history is anything to go by.
The Bible (Christianity)
Proverbs 4:23: "Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it."
Matthew 10:16: "Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves."
Quran (Islam)
Surah Al-Hujurat (49:6): "O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful."
Surah Al-Isra (17:36): "And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight, and the heart - about all those \[one\] will be questioned."
Dhammapada (Buddhism):
Verse 61: "Just as a flower that is lovely and beautiful but lacks fragrance, so are the fine but fruitless words of one who does not practice them."
Verse 63: "Do not underestimate evil, saying, 'It will not come near me.' A water jar fills drop by drop; the fool becomes full of evil, little by little."
Guru Granth Sahib (Sikhism):
Ang 1365: "O mind, be cautious forever; do not be lazy for even an instant."
Ang 141: "The True Guru has given this understanding, that one who looks upon all alike, is very wise."
