"Period poverty is an issue very close to my heart, and I was honoured to officiate the launch of Uganda’s first sanitary pad dispenser and vending machine by @cleanette_ug" PS, Dr. @DianaAtwine said during the official launch yesterday. "Many young people are not living the purpose for which they were created. But Esther and Cynthia are showing us what purpose truly looks like" Dr. Atwine added. She further highlighted the plight she observed during her visits to schools and health facilities; "In my visits to schools and hospitals across the country, I have listened to girls share painful stories of missing class, and even dropping out of school because they lack access to sanitary pads." "I thank God that this is the path, @EstherKakihoza and Cynthia @cycy_bk, have chosen. You are restoring dignity and giving girls hope for a better future, and I am certain that God will bless this work" she emphasized. As @MinofHealthUG, we are proud to support this cause. "I am happy to pledge that the Ministry will purchase 100 Cleanette machines to be placed in schools, health centers, and public spaces across the country" Dr. Atwine pledged. #MOHatWork

Ending period poverty in Uganda is not just about providing sanitary pads, it’s about restoring dignity, promoting equality, and empowering the girl child. When girls miss school or drop out because of a natural biological process, we are losing future leaders, innovators, and changemakers. We need to address this issue from multiple angles: Accessibility: Ensure menstrual products are affordable or freely available, especially in rural communities. Education: Break the silence around menstruation by integrating menstrual health education into school curriculums for both boys and girls. Policy and Support: The government and stakeholders should prioritize menstrual hygiene management in national budgets and health programs. Community Involvement: Encourage men, parents, and local leaders to be part of the conversation so that menstruation is no longer treated as taboo. Ending period poverty is a collective responsibility. When we provide dignity to every girl, we create a more inclusive and equal Uganda.
