Period Talk Uganda

During one of our outreaches, a 14 year old girl told us she was engaging in transactional sex just to afford pads. When she couldn’t, she used old rags, and missed school every month. After our follow-up visit, she told us: “Ever since you gave me reusable pads, I’m not staying home anymore. I’m also not engaging in sex for pads.” This is the reality of period poverty in Uganda. A lack of menstrual products doesn’t just affect hygiene, it affects education, safety, dignity, and a girl’s future. So far, we’ve reached 5,000+ girls with sustainable menstrual products, menstrual health education, and the dignity every girl deserves, but thousands more are still waiting. Our mission remains clear: No girl should be sexually assaulted for basic hygiene. No girl should miss school because of her period. No girl should feel shame for something natural. Fun fact 💡 Virginity has no medical definition, so menstrual cups and tampons can’t determine it. The hymen isn’t a seal. It can stretch with everyday activities, and some people are born with little or no hymenal tissue, which is completely normal. Accurate info matters 💛

It’s just period pain. But what if it isn’t?🎗️ Every month, women and girls are told their pain is normal, regardless of the severity. That it’s “just cramps.” That they’re being dramatic. But at least 1 in 10 women and girls worldwide live with endometriosis, and many wait 7–10 years for a diagnosis. Severe period pain is not normal. Here is the cycle no one talks about: 🚫 No pads → stays home 📉 Stays home → misses lessons ❌ Misses lessons → falls behind 💔 Falls behind → drops out 🔄 Drops out → cycle of poverty continues Period poverty is not a hygiene issue. It is a justice issue.

This is not a small problem. 📊 6 in 10 girls in Uganda miss school due to menstruation every year. That is not a statistic. That is a classroom half empty. A future half built. A generation quietly falling behind. #PeriodPoverty #MenstrualDignity

Every single month, she faces the same impossible choice: 🎒 Go to school and risk leaking, shame, and ridicule in class. 🏠 Stay home and miss lessons, fall behind, disappear from the register. Neither option should exist. Both are a failure of rights.

5:00 AM somewhere in Uganda. A girl wakes up. Her period has started. She reaches for a pad. There isn't one. Not because she forgot. Because her family cannot afford it this week. She lies still and waits for the pain to pass.
