@nomadpossum I remember seeing her for the first time at the basement of the museum where the conservation room was back in 2004. Magnificent indeed!

The magnificent Kore of Thera is home. This statuesque Sheila (2.43m) is now displayed in Santorini’s renovated Archaeological Museum, 2,700 years after she was sculpted from a block of Naxian marble.

The Byzantine church of Agios Georgios is one of the most picturesque monuments on the island of Naxos 🇬🇷 Perched on a riverbank in the village of Melanes, there’s much more to this little church than meets the eye 1/6 #greece #archaeology #naxos

How many archaeologists tall is this statue? At 11.5m & 70 tonnes, the “Dionysus” of Apollonas would have been the largest statue in the ancient Greek world. The only problem…it never made it out of the quarry! 📍Naxos, Greece 🇬🇷 #greece #archaeology #fieldwork

@histories_arch Just a small correction regarding the cave's name. It's called the Pitsa cave.

The Pista Cave was dedicated to the Nymphs (540 BC), near Corinth, Greece; which was explored in 1934. The 4 wooden painted paintings were found, unique examples of Corinthian painting. One of the best preserved shows a sacrifice in honor of the Nymphs. In front of the altar stands a woman holding a vessel (prochus). Next is a boy leading the lamb of the sacrifice and two others playing flute and lyre. National Archaeological Museum, Athens #archaeohistories

@GrecianGirly I find it difficult to call it Pavilion or Revelin (the name given by the previous tenants) for me it will always be "Touristiko"

The 'Pavilion'. A lovely spot for a spot of lunch on Pefkias Beach (or Pine Beach), Xylokastro, Peloponnese, Greece.

@cyllenea_ Yes, indeed. One road had totally worn away. Someone had stuck a large branch topped with brightly coloured plastic in the hole in the middle of the road both alerting the driver and closing the road off at the same time so we turned back.

A bench with a view. One of my favourite views over the mountains and the Gulf of Corinth. Video filmed today near Gellini, north Peloponnese, Greece. 🇬🇷#VisitPeloponnese #VisitGreece

#jeudiphoto

@cyllenea_ Yes, me too. Those places remind me of my childhood. Also Amfithea where my grandparents used to grow grapes. Don't visit there as much nowadays though. Tried to visit today but the road was too bad and had been partly washed away after the storms so had to turn back. 😕

@cyllenea_ Yes, you are right!!!! You obviously know it very well. We always make a point of stopping off at this place when we are travelling in the Gellini / Trikala area. 🤩 My family has land in Gellini and a house in Trikala so always visit the area when I am in Greece.

Over the course of centuries, people from across the Greek world traveled to the Oracle of Dodona in Epirus and asked questions inscribed on lead tables. More than 4,000 have been discovered and give a fascinating insight into what the people of #AncientGreece were thinking.

The theatre in the Oracle at Dodona, built by Pyrrhus, Hellenistic king of Epirus during the 3rd century BC. Initially dedicated to Mother Earth (Gaia- known as Dione) and later to Zeus and Dione, it was considered the oldest of the Greek oracles by the ancient Greeks.
