Today was a big move for the Susan @50 Chess Championship♟️✨
We held a successful press briefing with some of Malawi’s leading media houses — Zodiak Broadcasting Station, Times Television, Mibawa Television, Nation Publications Limited, and Malawi Broadcasting Corporation.
The energy in the room was powerful, the vision was clear, and the excitement is building! 🔥 This championship is not just about chess — it’s about strategy, celebration, empowerment, and making history at 50.
Malawi, get ready… this is going to be bigger than you think. ♟️💛
Stay tuned, register, and be part of the movement!

This happened to me in late 2018.
I secured funding from a UN agency for the pilot phase of an international project. I even obtained the government’s official signature as proof of institutional backing.
At the same time, I met the woman I choose to marry. Love and purpose were blooming together.
I was so confident the funding would be released. I prefinanced everything. I produced kits for schools across multiple regions. I organized a high-level official launch bringing together the UN Agency, government representatives, stakeholders, and the press. I trained selected teachers from different parts of the country — covering associated expenses.
My wife-to-be stood by me. She worked with me. She believed in the dream.
Three weeks after the weekly school sessions began, I received a phone call that changed everything:
The funding was cancelled.
That same day, I went home and she told me she was pregnant.
I was going to be a father for the first time.
But I had nothing.
I had lost 25 million naira in prefinancing.
I was owing 5 million naira to a friend’s friend. My savings were gone.
She would ask questions. I couldn’t tell her the truth. I was afraid the shock would harm the pregnancy. I chose silence. I chose lies. I chose to “protect” her — not knowing she had already sensed everything.
When she asked for money for hospital checkups, I had nothing to give.
The man I owed money to had me taken to the police station. I spent three days there before friends repay the debt.
When I returned home, she had made her decision.
She told me she could not build a future with a broke man — no car, no rent money, no feeding money.
In a matter of weeks, I had lost my money, my dignity, my love, and my sense of self.
So I went into personal exile — first to Togo, then to Côte d’Ivoire.
There, something unexpected happened.
I began spending time with out-of-school ad street children. We played football. We played ludo. And in their eyes, I saw myself — the street child I had been in the year 2000 when I lost both my parents.
It was like meeting my younger self again.
Three years later, I stumbled on stories from @Tunde_OD , @chessinslums and @thegiftofchess — teaching chess in slums.
Something inside me woke up.
I reached out immediately.
I travelled all the way to Lagos to collect the first 50 chess sets.
Those 50 chess boards became my resurrection.
I began organizing sessions for street children in Benin Republic, Togo, and Côte d’Ivoire. And every time a child learned how a pawn moves, every time a king was protected, every time a checkmate was celebrated — something inside me healed.
Chess restored my dignity.
Chess rebuilt my confidence.
Chess gave me language when I had lost my voice.
Chess gave structure to chaos.
Chess reminded me that even when you lose your queen, the game is not over.
Through The Gift of Chess, I returned to Benin Republic not as a failure — but as an Ambassador.
That was my social reintegration.
That was my spiritual restoration.
What looked like a devastating collapse in 2018 was actually divine redirection. God stripped everything away to align me with my true mission.
And from that rebirth, OKAY was born —
Orphans Keepers Africa Yearning for a Humanised World.
Today, I use sports — especially chess — to bring hope to thousands of out-of-school and street children.
The Gift of Chess is not just a program to me.
It is my treasure.
It is my second chance.
It is proof that broken men can rebuild — and then rebuild others.
To Tunde and the entire team of The Gift of Chess @charlesTandoh11 :
Thank you for unknowingly saving a life.
Thank you for giving me back my name.
Thank you for turning my exile into assignment.
Because of you, I am no longer running from my past.
I am building futures.
And this is only the beginning.
