@KatherineMangan Why quote @PamelaBurdman w/o pointing out that the CA higher ed system includes community colleges, the Cal state schools, and @UofCalifornia, each intended for *any* CA student who is *prepared* to thrive in it, nor that no one is calling for a "singular focus" on the SAT?

Teaching calculus to students who struggle with middle-school math "is like trying to teach English literature to someone who can’t read,” one Berkeley math professor told me. chronicle.com/article/test-o…

Watching semifinals @ScrippsBee w/@mquong1 & Ms17, both of whom are beating me at spelling. But “icosanoid” & “dharba” seem to be accepted alternate spellings, & the def of “cryosel” omitted the fact that the solute is usually salt. But the vocabulary is easy! #spellingbee

the university of california dropped the SAT and the preparedness of STEM freshmen plummeted so precipitously that they were having to reteach middle school math. and from this you learn "we should drop the MCAT from med school?" this certainly seems likely to improve the diversity of poor medical outcomes...

UC STEM faculty are absolutely right, and this change is long overdue. We’re doing our kids a disservice and putting at risk the reputation of the world’s best public university system. As Governor, I’ll bring back SAT/ACT scores as part of the admissions criteria for STEM degree applicants.

"Current admissions practices do not provide a sufficiently reliable check on mathematical readiness for STEM majors." Over 280 University of California STEM faculty have signed an open letter calling on the Board of Regents to reinstate standardized testing in admissions:

This is where we get the word “dauphin” as a term for the French heir apparent and, by extension, any heir apparent. Modern English “dolphin” is likewise derived from Old French “daulphin” and Latin “delphinus”. [3/4]

WORD FACT On dauphins and dolphins: In medieval France, the rulers of the region of Dauphiné used a dolphin in their coat of arms and were nicknamed le Dauphin (“the Dolphin”), from Old French “daulphin” and Latin “delphinus” (dolphin). [1/4]

@seanjwestwood No. Bureaucratic bloat is real, but “replace many unit-level administrative roles with staff who serve multiple academic units” is exactly not fixing it. Department-level staff do real work; it is the higher level administrators who do not … and get paid much more.

@dajmeyer @neetu_arnold Thank you! "The Task Force does not recommend that UC make standardized tests optional for applicants at this time." Alright, they objected, albeit ineffectively. Do they have any recourse now?

University of California STEM professors want standardized tests back due to severe math deficiencies among students: “We now observe preparation gaps so severe that instructors must reteach middle school mathematics” “The current admissions metric, based primarily on GPA & essays, can no longer reliably distinguish readiness for university-level STEM majors in an era of severe grade inflation & AI assisted application essays”

@neetu_arnold Did they speak up when the tests were being eliminated? If not, then they should be forced to teach the remedial courses.

My hat off to the faculty members for their courage and sense of duty to speak out. This situation was created entirely by racial politics. The foolishness is inconceivable to anybody with common sense. But our intellectuals on campuses and in the media were fully behind it. That's the amazing part.

@sfmcguire79 Surprise here is that it comes as no surprise. I guess at some point a GOP governor is going to address high school discipline and grading practices and start getting things done. As it is, the state is a perfect breeding ground for democrat voters.
