One hundred years ago today, on December 21 1923, Melbourne’s first W class tram, no 219, entered service. Over the following 33 years, a total of 752 trams were built to the W class design in several variants. A few still run today. Happy 100th birthday to this Melbourne icon.

The SEC will be there to support households to go all-electric to reduce their energy bills & emissions. 🍴 Teaming up with Helly Raichura, chef and owner at @EnterViaLaundry, we cooked up a delicious batch of dahl and chapati to showcase the benefits of induction cooktops.

@LouiseBloomfld I think some amalgamations might make sense in Tasmania. It has worked for some small rural councils already. But maybe the small rural councils merging is the only place where it makes sense. For the big city councils I’d like to see more sharing of resources.

Louise Bloomfield Alderman Hobart City Council
The Local Government review has a strong focus on amalgamations - and Hobart City Council is slated to be joined to Glenorchy City Council along with a part of Taroona. Salient points: 1. This results in the 'Western Shore Council' being one of the top ten largest Councils in Australia. 2. Large councils tend to have a political party based representation as independent candidates cannot compete with the manpower and other resources to gain a seat. Local Government will likely resemble a similar makeup to State Government. 3. HCC collects rubbish once a week, GCC collects rubbish once a fortnight. Simple difference but costly to bring in line and this will hardly be the only issue we will face. 4. If HCC is $16M in the red and reducing spending to sort it, GCC has hiked its rates to cover what it can - where is the money coming from to afford the structural change? 5. Higher costs for running a campaign over twice the area (it costs at least $5k to post out flyers in HCC alone) mean that candidates will need to be wealthier or fundraise a great deal more to consider a campaign locking many good people out of the race. 6. Many amalgamations in other states have resulted in massive cost blow outs and in some cases they have reversed the merger and gone back to single councils. Certainly if this Western Shore Council existed prior to my attempts to gain a seat in Council - I would not have considered such a thing as I would not have felt I could possibly front up the needed money and resources to get it done. I will be fighting for the right for ordinary folk to have a reasonable chance to represent their communities. Ratepayers not only need grass roots representation but should be able to reasonably expect that their money will not be wasted on massive restructure projects like this. #politas #lgtas

It’s here! Just received my author copies of Malayan Classicism. Surreal to finally hold the thing I’ve been working on in some form or other since 2017. What a journey this has been!
