Man, I appreciate all the love Willie McGee has been getting this weekend. He was the kind of MVP we’ll probably never see again; a fast guy with a good stick who could hit for high average, drive in runs without massive power, and generally find a ton of ways to help his team. Plus he looked great in those powder blue uniforms and rocked that double earflap helmet, which switch-hitters don’t really do anymore. An old school MVP! Great career.

Not enough people talk about Willie McGee • 2254 hits, .295 BA, 352 SB, 3029 TB • 1985 NL MVP, 1982 WS Champ, Silver Slugger • 4x All-Star, 3x Gold Glover, 2x Batting Champ • Led NL position players in WAR (8.2) in 1985 • Wore one number (#51) for his entire career • 84 out of 100 on @baseball_ref HOF monitor • Along with Eddie Murray, became part of a fun statistical anomaly in 1990; due to a mid-season trade from St. Louis to Oakland, McGee led MLB in hits without leading either league, and Murray led MLB in batting average without leading either league • One of just three players during the Live Ball Era to record a season with at least a .350 BA, .500 SLG, 215 hits, and 50 SB; one of just two (along with Tony Gwynn) to do so in the last hundred years

“Ask 3 before me” is a classroom practice you’d adopt if you **didn’t** want kids to learn to read or expand their vocabulary or be ready for future years learning.
