She was the youngest ever U.S. women's national champion at 13, and won it again at 14. Went into the 2022 Olympics at 16 with the weight of every gold medal expectation on her shoulders and...absolutely choked. Finished 6th. Retired from the sport at 17. Disappears for two years. Falls back in love with skating. Comes back into professional competitions for the 2024-2025 season. And in 2025 absolutely Goes Off. And now she's the first U.S. women's individual ice skating gold medalist since *before she was born* and ARE YOU KIDDING ME.

If you haven't looked up Alysa Liu's story, you should. She's everything Eileen Gu isn't. Her dad was a pro-democracy dissident who fled China in the 90s. She and her family outright rejected Chinese attempts to recruit her, and CCP agents harassed and intimidated them throughout the 2022 Beijing winter games. She was SIXTEEN and needed the FBI to get involved.

I’ve become fascinated by Alysa Liu’s story from a sports psychology lens. I’m not sure I’ve seen a talented young athlete completely rid themselves of external pressures and attain the level of athletic & artistic freedom she has. This woman is a mental Goliath.
