@iowahstennis My older daughter was a 4 sport athlete until graduating. My younger daughter was a 3 sport athlete until tennis moved to fall…she will pick something else up in spring now, unfortunately not tennis.

@iowahstennis I think it has to do with softball and baseball, then giving families time. With bball and vball camps in full swing in summer, it’s hard to work around everything to fit in a vacation. It’s really nice to have that time to not worry about missing if a multiport athlete.

The after dead week is rough. Other states play their first comp later in the first week, but I’m not sure if they have a dead week thing. In other words, maybe we should do what’s best for tennis, for tennis, and not cater to other sports though? 🙃

@iowahstennis Yes, but it is necessary for students to get a break and take some family time to regroup from the previous year. I say that as a mom and a coach…a break is needed.

@danajolene74 Didn’t say it killed it. This is also catering to tennis and not other sports for a change, at least in one facet.

@iowahstennis @The_Professor5 I am a high school volleyball coach, so not that’s not why. I encouraged all the girls to try and dual sport. It’s just hard in general, and we lost a lot of players this fall for our tennis program.

@danajolene74 @The_Professor5 I’ve heard a number of volleyball coaches are not willing to be flexible for multi-sport athletes, which is a bummer. Sad to see they are willing to help student-athletes compete in multiple things.

@The_Professor5 @iowahstennis My daughter had to give it up with a full volleyball schedule. 1A tennis is on its way to extinction.

@iowahstennis Single classes after 1A programs dry up in small schools.

I am pretty confident the individual tournament is just the same site, both the divisions at the same site. With how it’s written, I understand how it’s read that it could be combined draws. Surely the union isn’t insane, right? Right..?

@ErickZehr @iowahstennis Volleyball in our program runs 6 days a week, and not sure if it’s the primary sport how tennis will even fit into the fall for those athletes. Too bad for 1A in smaller schools vs rhe 1A with elite single sport athletes.

@iowahstennis I'm putting a LOT on faith here, because on the ground, this feels like it will kill 1a tennis. I will be very happy to be wrong, but feels like it will spare the Haves and hurt the Have Nots, as we struggle to build competitive teams of other sports' athletes. Fingers crossed 🤞

@iowahstennis Everyone has their own opinion. Mine is that SWI tennis would be gone.

@iowahstennis Making a choice for single sport athletes, that isn’t feasible. My daughter was a four sport athlete and finished at the top of the state, while pursuing volleyball career in college. And another daughter that plays three sports and volleyball as her primary.

Rumor has it that there is a vote within the IGHSAU tomorrow about moving girls tennis to the fall 👀
