هرچند بخشی از این تصور جنبه اسطوره‌ای دارد، ایرانیان تاریخ خود را تقریباً به‌صورت پیوسته از امپراتوری باستانی ایران تا امروز امتداد می‌دهند. این‌که رهبر پیشین جمهوری اسلامی، آیت‌الله علی خامنه‌ای، آذری‌تبار بود، برای هوادارانش مسئله‌ای محسوب نمی‌شد. ایرانیان نیز شاهان صفوی یا قاجار را صرفاً به‌دلیل ترک‌تبار بودن، غیرایرانی نمی‌دانند. این نگاه منحصر به ایران هم نیست؛ برای مثال، اگرچه جمال عبدالناصر در سال ۱۹۵۲ سلطنت مصر را سرنگون کرد، مصری‌ها همچنان به خدیوهای خود احترام می‌گذارند، حتی اگر زبان رسمی دربار آنان ترکی بوده باشد. مروری کوتاه بر تاریخ جدایی‌طلبی در ایران در عوض، ایرانیان جدایی‌طلبی قومی را با امپریالیسم پیوند می‌دهند. در جریان «بازی بزرگ» قرن نوزدهم، امپراتوری‌های بریتانیا و روسیه هر دو چشم طمع به ایران داشتند، هرچند هیچ‌یک آن را رسماً مستعمره خود نکردند. با این حال، چنین ایده‌ای را در نظر داشتند. در اواخر قرن نوزدهم، امپراتوری بریتانیا با این ایده بازی کرد که از پروژه‌ای جدایی‌طلبانه به رهبری شاهزاده قاجار، ظل‌السلطان، حمایت کند. در اوایل قرن بیستم نیز بریتانیا از شیخ خزعل حمایت کرد که رهبری یک دولت عربی جدایی‌طلب را با محوریت شهر نفت‌خیز خرمشهر بر عهده داشت. روس‌ها نیز از جنبش‌های جدایی‌طلب قومی حمایت کردند؛ از جمله «جمهوری مهاباد» در سال ۱۹۴۶ و هم‌زمان «حکومت خودمختار آذربایجان» که نخستین بحران واقعی جنگ سرد را رقم زد. تهاجم صدام حسین، رئیس‌جمهور عراق، به ایران در سال ۱۹۸۰ در عمل هدیه‌ای به آیت‌الله روح‌الله خمینی، رهبر انقلاب اسلامی، بود؛ زیرا او توانست با ادعای این‌که صدام قصد دارد ایران را بر پایه ایده «عربستان آزاد» از هم بپاشد، مردم را حول پرچم کشور بسیج کند. هنگامی که ایرانیان دریافتند هدف صدام نه صرفاً پایان دادن به جمهوری اسلامی، بلکه نابودی خود ایران است، حتی به بهای تثبیت قدرت خمینی نیز از کشورشان دفاع کردند. در دوران جمهوری اسلامی، کردها و بلوچ‌ها بیش از دیگران آسیب دیده‌اند؛ زیرا هم از نظر قومی و هم از نظر مذهبی در اقلیت قرار دارند. با این حال، انگ اجتماعی ناشی از حمایت قدرت‌های خارجی از جنبش‌های جدایی‌طلب، حتی پس از گذشت ۸۰ سال، همچنان بر فضای سیاسی ایران سایه افکنده است؛ به‌گونه‌ای که بسیاری از ملی‌گرایان ایرانی، از جمله ولیعهد پیشین، رضا پهلوی، هرگونه سخن از فدرالیسم را با توطئه‌ای برای تجزیه ایران برابر می‌دانند. چرا جدایی‌طلبی قومی نتیجه معکوس خواهد داشت با پایان آتش‌بس و ازسرگیری درگیری‌های نظامی، خطری که ایرانیان باید با آن روبه‌رو شوند، افزایش تمایل در محافل کاخ سفید به یافتن یک فرمول جادویی برای پایان دادن به جنگ و فشارهای تورمی ناشی از آن است. دونالد ترامپ، رئیس‌جمهور آمریکا، چه خوب و چه بد، از پیروی از سنت‌های دیپلماتیک سر باز می‌زند و اغلب نیز بی‌صبری نشان می‌دهد. همین مسئله او را در برابر کسانی آسیب‌پذیر می‌کند که ــ خواه با حمایت دولت‌هایی مانند جمهوری آذربایجان یا عربستان سعودی، خواه در قالب لابی‌گران، یا صرفاً تحلیلگرانی که تازه مسئول پرونده ایران شده‌اند اما درکی سطحی از این کشور دارند ــ او را به بازی با «کارت قومیت» ترغیب خواهند کرد. اگر پنتاگون از تصرف جزیره خارک بیم داشته باشد، زیرا نیروهای ایرانی مستقر در ارتفاعات ساحلی می‌توانند با پهپاد و موشک به آن حمله کنند، برخی تحلیلگران ممکن است استدلال کنند که حمایت از جدایی‌طلبی عربی این مشکل را حل می‌کند؛ زیرا در این صورت، کوه‌های زاگرس جنوبی بخشی از یک امارت عربی جدید خواهند شد. همین استدلال درباره میدان‌های نفتی خوزستان ــ همان منطقه‌ای که صدام در پی الحاق آن بود و شرکت‌های نفتی آمریکایی نیز ممکن است به آن چشم داشته باشند ــ مطالبات واقعی آنان بسیار پیچیده‌تر و ظریف‌تر از چیزی است که ملی‌گرایان ایرانی تصور می‌کنند. با این حال، اگر ترامپ از سر ناامیدی به دنبال یک میان‌بُر یا فرمول جادویی برود، نتیجه معکوس خواهد گرفت. اگر
