Meet Rashmi Nandagudi Badrinath, a Franklin resident who works as a solutions architect for the Artificial Intelligence Division of Schneider Electric’s North American arm in Tennessee. She designs scalable machine learning frameworks for the company’s energy management and industrial automation platforms, while also spearheading the testing, validation, and cross-functional deployment of complex AI models. Her journey from India to Middle Tennessee began in Bengaluru, where she earned a master’s degree in computer science from Visvesvaraya Technological University. She soon joined the Indian division of Dell EMC, located in Karnataka. Following her tenure at Dell EMC, which ended in 2022, Badrinath spent the next three years navigating the U.S. immigration process. This transition culminated in March 2025 when she relocated to Tennessee to join Schneider Electric’s expanding AI hub, initially working as a quality assurance engineer before advancing into her current architecture role. Badrinath most likely entered the U.S. on an H-1B specialty occupation visa sponsored by Schneider Electric. Data from the National Center for Education Statistics, however, reveals her skills are far from rare. Out of the 51,000 students who graduate with a master’s degree in computer science in the U.S. annually, more than 20,000 are American citizens. While the specific details of her compensation package remain private, industry benchmarks place her annual salary in the $200,000 range. By comparison, the average salary paid to an American citizen in a similar architectural role sits lower, at roughly $175,000 per year. Why should Americans care about Schneider Electric’s hiring practices? The answer lies in the massive amount of public funding the company receives. Over the last decade, the energy giant has directly secured more than $7.65 million in Tennessee taxpayer funds. The corporation also continuously benefits from lucrative, state-level statutory incentives, including heavily reduced utility rates. Furthermore, the company capitalizes on indirect taxpayer windfalls through high-profile partnerships. In March 2025, Schneider Electric finalized a five-year contract with the Tennessee Titans to serve as the official energy management partner for the new Nissan Stadium, scheduled to open in 2027. The $2.1 billion stadium project is backed by one of the largest public sports subsidies in U.S. history, with more than $1.25 billion funded directly by Tennessee taxpayers. Aside from the fact that Schneider Electric benefits from public funds while relying heavily on international workforce pipelines, a deeper national security issue emerges. Badrinath operates within a division integrated entirely into American critical infrastructure. Her work directly feeds the data centers and power grids managed under the oversight of Indian-born Vandana Singh, the senior vice president of the Secure Power Division. Singh, who initially entered the U.S. on an F-1 student visa to attend Wake Forest University, spent more than two decades as an executive at Dell before transitioning to Schneider Electric. This leaves Tennessee taxpayers in the unsettling position of subsidizing a multibillion-dollar foreign corporation that bypasses a robust domestic talent pool in favor of international workers, all while handing the digital keys of America's energy infrastructure to non-citizens. As long as public funds continue to flow into corporate hands without strict domestic hiring mandates, American engineers will remain underrepresented in the very industries their own tax dollars are funding. If corporate giants are going to rely on American tax dollars to build national infrastructure, it is time they rely on American minds to secure it.
