July is National Bison Month! Here's a bull at Rocky Mountain Arsenal enjoying a good ol' wallowing. Wallowing looks like a good time, and it is, but it's also pest control, coat shedding, and during rut, a dominance display all rolled (hah) into one. Over time those same wallows carve depressions into the prairie that fill with rainwater and become wetland habitat for insects, amphibians, and birds. A bison rolls in the dirt and accidentally builds an ecosystem!

The work week is finally in the rearview mirror, but before leaving Tampa, I had to stop and look at that monstrosity of a Confederate flag off I-75. The background here is a masterclass in progressive cognitive dissonance. Sometime after 2020 when the patron saint of fentanyl overdosed under a police officers knee & the world lost it's mind. Suddenly, a multi-tiered coalition of outraged Democrats noticed the flag and threw a textbook tantrum. The division of labor was beautiful. You had the newly arrived, angry snow-Karen transplants running the complaint department — writing strongly worded demands about a historic *Democrat* battle flag their own political ancestors created. Then you had the local hoodrats doing what they do best: yelling, acting violent, and threatening to burn it down. The historical irony is thick. These folks are completely oblivious to the fact that Abraham Lincoln and the proud Republican Party actually kicked their ancestors' teeth in and freed the slaves. Logistically, the threats were hilarious. The pole is 139 feet high. The snow-Karens weren’t ruining their tennis skirts to go vertical, but the other half of the coalition is already highly skilled at scaling fences and obstacles. Still, carrying lighter fluid up a 14-story metal pipe is a stretch. The property owner took it down for safekeeping, mostly because the agile activists were packing more unregistered handguns than actual jobs. But as soon as the northern transplants got bored and moved on to the next TikTok talking point, the flag went right back up to the top of the steel. Where it currently flies — a towering daily reminder that Democrats are not only historically blind, but hilariously incompetent. I snapped a few pictures from outside the locked gate. Truly a fascinating piece of local theater.
