Let’s keep the church weird. Our message—Christ crucified—is a stumbling block to the Jews and foolishness to the Gentiles. 1 Corinthians 1:23

…Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. It thwarts the modern assertion by anti-Zionists (dare I say, antisemites) that the land does not belong to the Jews.

As I start to read the Book of Joshua, I can’t help but note: Joshua is to the Pentateuch as Acts is to the Gospels. Also, it would be an interesting read — this historical account of the conquest of the land of Canaan by the Jews as part of the fulfillment of God’s promise to…

“so that what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: He himself took our weaknesses and carried our diseases.” — Mat 8:17 Hence “when I am weak, then I am strong.” And by Jesus’ stripes we are healed.

The law does its work in preaching by shutting every mouth and stopping every boast. The gospel does its work by opening every hand to receive what no mouth could boast of earning.

Dear brothers and sisters, The Law confronts our sin. And The Gospel tells us what God has done about, to, and with our sin. About? Jesus came, lived, died, rose, and ascended. To? Jesus shed his blood, and covered it. With? Removed, as far as the east is from the west.

“I (Moses) can no longer act as your leader. […] Joshua is the one who will cross ahead of you, as the Lord has said.” Deut 31:2-3 It is not the law (Moses) but grace embodied in Yeshua (Joshua) that brings us into the kingdom.

The Father gives a people to the Son, the Son loses none of them, and the Son raises them up at the last day. (John 6:39, 40, 44, 54) Believer, your hope, both now and forever, is not contingent on you but on something that is entirely outside of you.

"I beseech you to be persuaded that here you are to work nothing, here you are to do nothing, here you are to render nothing unto God, but only to receive the treasure, which is Jesus Christ, and apprehend him in your heart by faith, although you be never so great a sinner; and so shall you obtain the forgiveness of sins, righteousness, and eternal happiness; not as an agent but as a patient, not by doing, but by receiving." - Edward Fisher, The Marrow of Modern Divinity, 132

“If you love me, you will keep my commands.”—John 14:15 This is not a threat. This is not a challenge. This is not calling you to go prove to God, to yourself, and to others that you really love Jesus. This is a wonderful PROMISE.

The Prayer of Humble Access is perhaps the greatest anti-self-righteous prayer ever written in English. “We do not presume to come to this thy Table, O merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness. . . We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under thy Table.” That single line destroys: Pelagianism, legalism, merit theology, moralistic spirituality. The communicant approaches solely through God’s manifold and great mercies, ". . . but in thy manifold and great mercies. . . thou art the same Lord, whose property is always to have mercy. . ."

“An important key in diffusing anger, wherever it comes from, is to preach the gospel to yourself—often enough and thoroughly enough that patience, grace, and love flow out rather than insults, wrath, and lava.” — Randy Newman, Bringing the Gospel Home

‘“Preaching the gospel to yourself” is an essential lifelong, transformational skill. We need to resist the temptation to respond to accusations of guilt (whether from within or without) with antidotes other than the cross.’ — Randy Newman, Bringing the Gospel Home
