@nickgraynews HAPPY BIRTHDAY! 🎉Love these. You could try a twist on 2. Something that helps you see the place differently. I'm 19 into going to 100 places and describing them for 3 pages, to notice better. Amazon Warehouse visit was awesome, but also fun when it was the outside of my gym.

It is my birthday this week Here are 5 things I’ve learned (1) Don’t be too cool to care Show up early. Send a Thank You note. Dress a little nicer. Nerd out on a hobby. It is cool to care. (2) Be a tourist in your own city Sometimes I go to the same places. I do the same things. This isn’t bad. But there’s a lot more. More restaurants. More cafes. Different dog parks. So poke around in your own town. You might find something new for your routine. (3) Get outside as soon as possible in the morning Sunlight in your eyes. Fresh air. It feels good. That saying “Win the morning, win the day” feels more correct the older I get. (4) Go to the gym. Even for 5 minutes “I’ll just lift or walk incline for 5 minutes” is an easy way to convince myself to get my gym clothes on. I’m always happy after a good workout. (5) Read more books I’m still working on this. Lately enjoying: Mark Twain biography. And: There Is No Antimemetics Division. The end. Those are my 5 for now: 1- Cool to care 2- Be a tourist at home 3- Get outside early 4- 5 minute gym 5- Read more books What should I try for next year?

@thesamparr @WillGuidara Yes. Loved it. Immediately downloaded his book too. (So well written and read.) When I really love something I am the worst for trying to get everyone to watch/listen/read. It's now on that list! (Along with my eternal quest to get everyone to watch Patriot, the series).

@WillGuidara twitter will ruin my reach for posting a link, so just search: My first million on youtube or spotify. Also...if you already listened...what did you think...did you like it as much as I did?

If you consume 1 podcast this week, make it this one. Trust me: Today's MFM guest wrote the best business book I’ve read in years. His name is @WillGuidara and the book is Unreasonable Hospitality. Serve people so well it becomes a story they can’t stop telling...that's the book's main theme. But its SO MUCH MORE. It's about being excellent + having high standards. Episode is live. I felt more energized after this episode than I have in a long time.

@stephsmithio Heard @JasonYanowitz on his pod recommend this one as a masterpiece. Listened to the first chapter so far, really intriguing. Being interested in time travel or living in a simulation should put it at the top of the list

@stephsmithio I liked the simple practicality of Ten Zen Seconds (Eric Maisel). The Anthropocene Reviewed (John Green) for sweet, sad, funny short essays. CivilWarland in Bad Decline (George Saunders) for some wild short stories. Also loved his Swim in a Pond in the Rain on audio.

The main reason to produce something every day is that you must throw away a lot of good work to reach the great stuff. To let it all go easily, you need to be convinced that there is “more where that came from.” You get that in steady production. @nickgraynews Nick, you have made my day!! I am doing a Quest where I'm going to 100 places, then describing them in 3 pages. 'Inside an Amazon warehouse' was on my very first what-if list. I didn't know it would be so easy. Going next month. Fun. Thank you. 💛 questful.world/quest-spark

Hi from Aspen, Colorado 🏔️ I’m here for the week with my fiancée I have 2 new posts I want to share soon: (1) Free Amazon Warehouse Tours, and (2) Cloudflare Connect 2025 — my opinion on the best sessions More info AMAZON TOURS I did a tour of an Amazon Warehouse to see the logistics center of a packing hub — you should totally do this! My friend Jonathan Wegener showed me how anyone can sign up. Very cool 1 hour experience and I’ll tell you all I learned and saw CLOUDFLARE CONNECT 2025 I like to cheer for certain companies like people cheer for sports teams My favorite company is called Cloudflare, and I love them because they are working to build a better Internet They are hosting a big customer and partner conference in October, and I took time to read through every single session. I wrote up my favorites and the ones that look most interesting TO BE CONTINUED I will try to type all this stuff up later today or tomorrow. More to come and thanks for reading!!

@ShaanVP I took a lot of notes in the @benmlevy episode, like the nerd I am. The discussion about post-economic/craving hard was interesting, as overlaps with the kinds of people who signed up for my Questful pilot. (Also, piano is the best instrument ever. A fun challenge for life.)

I've come to realize that A) If you’re serious all the time, you’ll wear out before the truly serious stuff gets done; and B) if you don’t regularly appreciate the small wins, you will never appreciate the big wins. They’ll all fall through your fingers like sand as you obsess on the next week, the next to-do, the next thing to fix. This makes “success” a Pyrrhic victory at best.

I got within arms-length of two unique animals in my backyard yesterday The first is the Western Slimy Salamander. I was walking down to Barton Springs Pool and I saw him run across the sidewalk The second is a Gray Fox and was MUCH more exciting. I stepped outside before bed and he was trying to burrow under my house- Maybe trying to find a squirrel or something in the baseboards. He JUMPED back and was startled But I tried to cox him to come over to let me pet him (I know this is not realistic and possibly a horrible idea) He actually stayed around for a few minutes like the last time I had a fox in the backyard, but then in the blink of an eye he was gone Anyhow. I like animal sightings like this! Please share if you have any good ones

@nickgraynews Agreed! The energy of Lightning Talks (5mins) can be fun as part of the design, if supported and MC'ed well. I've created a bunch of fun structures so anyone can share one with flair. E.g. The Portal, The Flamingo, The Fosbury Flop. A⚡️2h Cocktail Party talk would be 🧨

I generally believe that traditional conferences are Dead Man Walking Panels are boring, most keynote speakers use dated material, and on-stage interviews don't pack the punch that they used to So there is a good opportunity to re-imagine the 500+ in-person gathering industry, but how? Audience attention spans are too short for the typical stacked hour-long agendas that most conferences use Energy levels are low and I think budgets will get cut as the attendee ROI doesn't match up with benefits which are mostly networking in the hallways and after-hours drinks We've seen it with the rise and fall of TEDx events which you rarely hear about anymore- and even those had shorter 20 minute speaker sets but a largely uncurated audience The challenge for anyone who wants to reinvent the space is that it is difficult to scale small group discussions above 150 people So that's where the large conference model originated: put some star speakers on stage and assemble folks in a large audience to listen to them But I think that's not going to keep working There are exceptions but they are rare Dialog, the sorta-secretive event that does this best and charges $18,000 per ticket, is doing this well with incredibly curated small-group discussions at scale They have dozens of moderators and use a divide and conquer model to create interesting converstaions I think an attendee's satisfaction with events will increasingly be correlated to the time that they are talking, not listening I'm sure there are other bright lights in the event world who have great speakers and innovative programming If you know of some, please let me know so I can start making a list But I think that the typical large conference format with 6-8 hours of speakers on stage (the "Sage on the Stage" model) is at risk of losing massive market share to smaller events Remember that large conferences as we know them are only a modern invention and we aren't locked to stick to this format I'm not sure what is next but I still believe in the power of in-person gatherings

NEW podcast episode is up! "Chris Sacca — How to Succeed by Living on Your Own Terms and Getting Into Good Trouble" Chris Sacca is the co-founder of Lowercarbon Capital and manages a portfolio of countless startups in energy, industrial materials, and carbon removal. If it’s unf**king the planet, he’s probably working on it. Previously, Chris founded Lowercase Capital, one of history’s most successful funds ever, primarily known for its very early investments in companies like Twitter, Uber, Instagram, Twilio, Docker, Optimizely, Blue Bottle Coffee, and Stripe. But you might just know him as the guy who wore those ridiculous cowboy shirts for a few seasons of Shark Tank. Please enjoy!

I love how @nickgraynews rethinks and designs things to be more fun and interactive. Here it's helping his friend @americanbaron_ with his book launch. Some great ideas. (And I have added A Comedy of Nobodies to my list. It's described as 'Seinfeld meets Fleabag'.)
Nick Gray@nickgraynews

most book launches or author readings are boring but I think I have a solution!! normally the author reads excerpts, an interviewer asks sorta-lame questions, then they sign books so I did something different last month and people loved it. this is what I learned: Give out name tags to attendees It sounds stupid but I'll tell you why it works for a better reading Do an integrated Q&A portion early Do it early and NOT at the end. I'll tell you how and when we did ours because we actually did 2 Discussion breaks Schedule a few small group discussion breaks for the audience. This is perhaps the MOST important tip Group photo People always forget this! Take a group photo with the author. For clout and social shares How to end it At the end, do the normal book signing and photo op That is it from a high-level btw in the photo this is my friend Baron Ryan aka @americanbaron_ He wrote a book and wanted to do a reading for it We did it at @BookPeople here in Austin Texas If this post gets some likes then I will reply on thread with all my notes including agenda, tips, tricks, etc I just think author readings and book launches don't have to be done the same boring way and this is what we did to make it more interactive!!
