Britain is heading for near-universal heat pumps by 2050. Speaking to the Parliamentary Press Gallery today, Grant Shapps suggested govt had given up on the idea that hydrogen could replace natural gas as the main way of heating homes. Story @theipaper: inews.co.uk/news/politics/…

@ShanuMathew93 @FracSlap Exactly! Also the cost! Quick math: Oxy scope 1, 2 & 3 emissions in 2021 = 228.25 million tons per year x $200-350/ton DAC cost target = ~$46-80 billion per year to offset just Oxy's fossil production. That's gotta be some really valuable energy to be worth that kind of cost.

@brucenilles Gas utility is Nicor? Looks like the disruption is going to get a lot more real very quickly for companies like Southern that deny that electrification is the solution to building emissions.

One of the most important findings in the recent IPCC report is that we ultimately determine how much warming will occur. There is likely no warming "in the pipeline" once emissions get to zero. Rather, CO2 concentrations fall and temperatures stabilize carbonbrief.org/explainer-will…

The world is turning away from new coal. "We found that for every $1 in coal project lending that reached financial close in 2022, another $14 earmarked for previously proposed projects was stopped." From @CarbonBrief: carbonbrief.org/guest-post-coa…

Amazing! The march toward electrifying buildings continues. Utilities more broadly will get the PSA at some point + start working towards it rather than against it. nrdc.org/bio/claire-lan…

Even as we electrify steam & high temp process heat w/companies like @AtmosZeroSteam & @rondoenergy, we may be able to directly electrify cement production too, w/@SublimeSystems. Is industry really "hard to decarbonize" or is it that we just started finally trying hard enough?

Time for a bit of climate hope. Solar power is the fastest growing energy technology in history, and wind is not far behind. This graph shows how rapidly different energy technologies expanded after reaching their first exajoule of energy production, on a logarithmic scale.

In 2011, the average range of electric cars was just 73 miles. It's now 247 miles. Some are getting more than 500 miles.

It was a busy year last year but how did I miss Denmark setting out plans to remove all gas from homes by 2030, to be replaced with heat pumps and heat networks? thelocal.dk/20220419/denma…
