@beccalew Been reflecting on this all year, due to shared observations in urban planning and people not understanding technosocial politics there much either. One big challenge is our education systems don't help people understand population-level dynamics; as we saw w/ covid.

The Nazis rose to power legally. Every mechanism they used to take complete control was within the laws of the Weimar Republic. Once they got total power they didn’t give it up until millions were dead at their hands and parts of Germany were flattened.

There was a time when using social media felt like a gust of wind under the wings, a provocation to think quicker and freer, a way of making new friends.
Now, how changed is all that. The public fora are become an echo chamber, a public pillory for dissent, a place where writers post to weigh their insignificance and swallow their pride.

@ryanrz @devonzuegel I find it debatable that sprawl development with a walkable town center mall-style pattern (like a Disney town) with car parking lots on the outskirts is all that different. It all seems still too car-centric with nearly all the spatial externalities of suburbanism.

@danlatorre @devonzuegel Hey Dan, as you know, I spent a decade of my career trying to transform existing cities. And Devon was active in the CA Yimby movement.
Yes, we need to fix existing cities. But we also need better greenfield development. California in particular has a massive housing shortage.
