Can anyone identify the badly worn badge on this helmet? I’ve had it since the early 70’s. Is it #WWI?

@RobLooseCannon Great post Rob, Broy was a Detective Sergeant at the time and Brunswick St was the HQ for G Division of the DMP. He was subsequently made a Colonel by the Irish Army and was later Commissioner of An Garda Síochána.

If you look closely, next time you're being dragged inside in handcuffs, Pearse Street Garda station has some surprises. Built in 1915, this impressive station was the Great Brunswick Street barracks for the Dublin Metropolitan Police where Michael Collins carried out a legendary espionage mission. Built on the site of a row of shops, the barracks followed the classist British model of having separate entrances for constables and officers. Triple arch doorways were for rank-and-file coppers. Elegant single archways were for officers. And the segregation continued inside with things like staircases and the barrack's sleeping area. But the coolest vestige of this partition-obsessed system is the stone busts, known as label stops. The lads with the tall "bobby" like helmets are constables. The flat tops are officers in caps. They all have spiffing moustaches covering their presumable stiff upper lips. An even closer inspection shows the pseudo-gargoyles have rank epaulets on their shoulders. These were features of Scottish Baronial style architecture. In the fictionalised historic film "Michael Collins" the Big Fella goes undercover inside Dublin Castle, however, it was actually these barracks where the general`s courageous “treasonous” espionage took. A double-agent Dublin Metropolitan colonel called Ned Broy spirits Collins in through the front door. He then indicates an escape route via Townsend Street. Collins's mission was to acquire or copy intelligence files on Republicans compiled by the dreaded "G-Men", the plain clothed detective arm of the DMP. He was also hoping to learn these secret policemen’s modus operandi. A plaque on the door immortalises the daring scene. But that fateful night nearly nothing went right! Midnight, 7th of April, 1919. A tall, broad-shouldered man in a nondescript long coat emerges from the rain and shadows. Minutes before he made a phone call to the barracks. ‘Field here” he said, using his codename “Is that Mr. Long?’". There is a brief pause, heavy breathing. ‘Yes. Bring a candle.’” Long was the codename of Colonel Ned Broy, a Republican patriot who took an enormous risk for his country. His shift started at 10 pm but he was not alone in the barracks. Fate rolled the dice. Or rather, flug a couple of stones. A drunk DMP trainee smashed a window, perhaps attempting to gain access to his bunk via the window without being spotted by the night watch. A Sergeant called Kerr was having a bout of insomnia and was amusing himself dossing about Broy’s office. He had to be made vanish by midnight before Collins, one of the most wanted men in Ireland, gained entry. Miraculously, at 11.50 pm Sergeant Kerr decided to go beddy-byes. Mick however didn't bring the candle as requested. Broy later speculated he thought the candle comment was a nervous joke. He didn't realise the secret files room was more like a crypt than an office space. It had no electricity or windows. So both men found themselves creeping by candlelight, rooting through the precious files which meant life or death for the Republic, knowing at any moment the full force of the DMP could come smashing through the only escape door, guns blazing. A final tense interruption was the arresting constable who busted the window breaker looking for an estimate for the value of the glass to be replaced. Finally, after 5 hours mission was accomplished and Collins escaped into the predawn dark Dublin, armed with priceless intelligence harvested from under the nose of the enemy. @Gazand @FrankoSerpico Off point, but I can't help thinking some senior NCO's would be having words with some of the people in that photo about where the front is and where their eyes were.

Could you imagine members of the Irish Defense forces marching at a funeral in Larne or Portrush? Unionists would be calling for airstrikes on Dublin.
