NEW: Maternity pay for teachers is set to rise to 8 weeks full pay. We covered how this impacts teachers in our long-read last yr & revealed that civil service staff get an extra 20 weeks off. The increase is welcome, but still doesn’t come close to most other public sectors.

In a heavily female profession, and one with a persistent retention problem, this isn’t a new issue, but one successive govt’s have chosen not to tackle. Today’s announcement is certainly thanks to the campaigning of @mtpt_project & unions like @NEUnion. tes.com/magazine/news/…

Why are we opening an indicative strike ballot on funding, pay and working conditions on 28 February? Years of sustained austerity mean our schools are running on empty. Every day, educators are being asked to do more and more with fewer resources. The pressure is relentless. The government has submitted evidence to the pay review body that recommends: - a real-terms pay cut - that any pay increase must be funded by schools themselves - a review of the limit on working hours All of this comes at a time when schools are already stretched to breaking point. If you’re a member, ask yourself: 1) Can you reasonably work after school and run enrichment activities on top of an already exhausting day if the government removes the working hours limit? 2) Can your school fund any pay award without cutting jobs or vital resources? 3) Will a 2% pay award this year - and every year for the next three - help your family keep up with the cost of living? Educators are leaving the profession in huge numbers. The system is grinding to a halt. Vote yes to action

The govt has focused heavily on white working-class boys - improving their outcomes will feature heavily in the WP. But it is their female peers who see the sharpest drop at GCSE. @CharlotteSantry investigates how they have slipped through the net: tes.com/magazine/news/…

Victory at Arthur Terry Learning Partnership. After 9 days of strike action, with strong pickets across 20 schools, mass parent support and sustained public pressure, NEU reps and members have won. - Redundancies stopped. - TLRs protected. - Regradings blocked. - Term-time only changes scrapped. - EHCP and pupil premium funding protected. But most importantly accountability secured as the senior leadership has gone. This is the power of organised workers standing together with their communities. Congratulations to ATLP members and reps, and thank you to everyone who stood in solidarity. ✊

It took Greenland not Gaza for Mark Carney to call time on the international rules based order. This is a fundamentally racist equation, as I explain in my new column for Middle East Eye: middleeasteye.net/opinion/carney…
