I’ve seen a couple of people in the last few days claiming that the hallucination problem is intractable and can never be fixed in LLM systems. Except, it’s pretty much gone in modern models if they are doing reasoning and have tools available so that they can check facts.
It’s one thing to incorrectly predict the future, but incorrectly predicting the past is really not the same thing at all.

@JohnLeFevre @dieworkwear "Mutilating children" we should outlaw circumcision then. Which is an actual procedure done without the consent of the child, and can result in pretty horrific complications as they grow up.
English

Not off topic:
- Gay dudes I know are mostly smart, successful, and interesting.
- Adults can have whatever preference they want in fashion or the bedroom.
- I appreciate bold fashion but (as you know) believe that most people are best served staying in a comfort zone because of time, resources, and function
- the three article rule (which wasn’t a law) was from the the 1950s/60s, and is entirely irrelevant to the point of what is happening now with white liberals collecting trans kids like LV purses or gender clinics for kids becoming a billion $ business.
- no one had a problem with cross dressing. Patrick swayze went from Road House to To Wong Foo in the 90s and no one cared.
And also on topic:
Mutilating children is a harmful social contagion - a lesson progressive countries like Sweden learned a long time ago.
English

Not surprising if you know clothing history. From the 1940s through 60s, anti-cross-dressing laws were widely used to harass LGBTQ people—especially trans women and drag performers. Police enforced a so-called “three-article rule,” claiming people had to wear at least three items of clothing associated with their assigned sex. Though often informal, this rule justified arrests under vague laws about indecency or disguise. The stigma, harassment, and medical gatekeeping that targeted trans people continued through the end of the century.

This is what social contagion looks like. When I was a kid, we had eating disorders, goths, Wiccans, and parents who forced kids to play a sport to vicariously fulfill some unmet dream of theirs. Now, we have this:

@unclebobmartin You can't just claim something is irrefutable. Prove it.
English

It is an irrefutable fact that a society that does not value the having and raising of healthy children must end in ruin.
It is therefore also irrefutable that a political ideology that supports the killing of children before they are born, the sterilization of children after they are born, and the indoctrination of children, to avoid having children of their own in pursuit of more selfish goals, will lead their societies into ruin.
English

@polypocketknife I saw them live once and he introduced the band by just introducing himself and then saying "here's the band". Didn't say anyone else's name. I always thought that was kind of a jerk move. Not surprised he's got other things.
English

@ZeForener I've seen self taught people with all of these and degree people with none. It's highly dependent on the motivation of the individual to learn.
English

@ZeForener Fundamentals. My degree exposed me to the fundamentals of modern networking, machine code, compute theory and more (like different maths) that grounds me in any environment. Some details might be new but the essence is all the same. Of course this is heavily "it depends".

@rickasaurus TDD is often the best way to discover the API you are working on in the first place. It focuses you on the external interface and keeps you out of the implementation. I'll rewrite my tests often as I'm working through an API before I move on to implementing it. It's cheap to do.
English

@patilindrajeets Both of the alternate implementations have different behavior when nr_groups is 2. Which leads me to believe that the explicit if else really helps highlight logic and prevents bugs.
English

@liminal_warmth Yep. I heard a really simple recommendation once to just flip the bottles over after you've taken them, and flip them back the next time you brush your teeth. Super simple but works like a charm for me.
English

@rascalking @m_older I'm on season 9! This show has held up way better than I thought. It's not perfect but it's much better than a lot of the more modern shows. And yeah, ignoring the characterizations in the movie was the right call.
English

@ProgrammerDude This is cool. You can already encrypt you hard drive to your tpm I'm excited for more of this!
English

@mykola This one's a little strange but I'll go for absurd doses of hot sauce when I'm really upset. It's not typically harmful but I can't focus on anything else at the time.
English

Hey, kind of a tricky question but if you are #ActuallyAutistic and as an adult choose to engage in less-harmful forms of self-harm to regulate etc, can you tell us about that?
There's a sense that we self-harm out of irrational motivation, but I want to complicate that story.
English

@mykola You probably are aware but for those that aren't it's pretty easy to break your hand punching walls. I did this a few weeks ago when I punched a doorframe.

@hillelogram I've been trying to use Alloy to model game states and find inconsistencies in rules for a tabletop game I've been working on. I wanted to use it as a test suite, but haven't found a convenient way to do that with the existing tooling. See github.com/RocketPuppy/Re… if curious.
English

I just wrote 'Finding Alloy's Niche'. buttondown.email/hillelwayne/ar…

@m_older Dang I was hoping for something like "all city governments have a citizen proposal hotline to call for issues to vote on" but I guess the world isn't so neat as I'd like it to be. We do actually have a neighborhood association for a different issue. We had to take it to court.
English

@m_older How do I get involved in any meaningful way in local government? It feels so inscrutable. I can tell you how to make reliable systems to secure trains but if you asked me how I could make my street safer so I don't get killed by speeding cars walking the dog I couldn't tell you.

Fin: I didn't expect to learn things about myself by doing these! This was a really helpful exercise and thank you @ADHD_Alien for posting! I have a lot of stuff to talk to my therapist about now haha!
English

1. I told my dad I think I have ADHD in middle school. But I did well in school and "remembered what I was saying when I get distracted" so I can't have it. Fast forward to 29 and I get tested after seeing these comics and my attention scores are abysmal. Whoops.
