Coingecko and coinmarketcap mobile apps share data with advertisers. darkfolio doesn't. no ads, no data collection. And for good reason. Our verifiably blind pricing means we can't know what you're tracking. And, with tor, we can't know your IP. Also with a generous free tier. Is this too good to be true? Nope. I built the app I wanted for myself, to protect myself. I don't have to maximize value for shareholders. Since I built what I wanted, anyone else can have it, too. But I will tell you my business model. I'm banking on enough people giving good reviews to inspire enough people into subscribing for Tor and decoy cover so that I can cover most of my server costs. So if you use darkfolio and like it, please give us that 5 star review on the app store. Hopefully, later this summer/early fall: open-sourcing as much as I can, including an Android version with a reproducible build.

2/ Heard of ADINT aka ADvertising INTelligence? Your apps don't just show ads. They stream of info about your GPS location + a unique identifier to HUNDREDS OF BROKERS EVERY SECOND. The industry swears the data is "anonymous" but it's actually a Spies-eye-view. Of everyone.

People will pay hundreds for hardware wallets and steel plates, and then let coingecko/coinmarketcap and all their partners know how much of which assets they hold, companies that have leaked millions of users' data for the whole world to see. You can't even track stocks and ETFs. Instead, use darkfolio. We have a generous free tier. We can't know what you're tracking. You'll find other valuable privacy features, too.

Craig has done really excellent work on this. There’s no tradeoff for privacy here. Kinda the opposite. Look and feel is better too.

Don’t use the coingecko, coinmarketcap apps, which collect all sorts of personal data - ip addresses, portfolio holdings, passwords, etc. They’ve already leaked millions of users’ data. Use @darkfolioapp. No accounts, no passwords. And with verifiably blind pricing and tor, we can’t know what you’re tracking or from what IP. Almost nothing to leak in the first place.

This is also good life advice. Everyone needs brutally honest feedback if they want to improve at something. Saint Paisios says that excuses are of the devil. And overly positive feedback is just a preemptive excuse from another.

As a vibecoder working on a privacy project, it’s been crucial to ensure that I’m getting the unvarnished truth. The further away from reality you’re led by feel-good feedback, the worse the project will be. So at crucial points, I will remind Claude that I require brutal honesty.

Do engineers who use Claude Code (et. al.) worry about the obsequiousness problem? When we talked with @heyitsnoah he pointed out that "pair programming" has long been a thing in software development. But presumably in a pair, one human isn't just there to validate the other.

darkfolio custodies no funds, but I wanted to build a portfolio tracker that would support rather than undermine decoy wallets. So I created Ghost Mode, a self-consistent plausible deniability system. When activated, one PIN takes you to one space with watchlists/portfolios, and another PIN takes you to another space with different watchlists/portfolios. Nothing in either space says "this is the real stuff" or "this is the decoy stuff." Users choose what they want to use each space for. And both have the same features, in and under the hood. One crucial constraint, then: someone inspecting the app shouldn't be able to tell that someone is in the decoy, even if they *know* about the existence of ghost mode itself. But I ran into an issue with Apple's purchase history. The original set up would make Ghost Mode a paid feature and the decoy would appear, in the app, as under free tier, where Ghost Mode is locked. Then, all free tier users would give paid users in the decoy plausible deniability. Is this person truly free tier, without ghost mode, or someone with ghost mode in use? You wouldn't be able to tell. But I soon discovered that Apple's purchase history in iOS is permanently visible, and you can't do anything about it. So someone could quickly find the receipt and see that, although the app shows as free tier with ghost mode disabled, the user had an active subscription. Cover blown. Plausible deniability gone. After a couple days of failing to come up with a solution, I feared that Apple had made the feature impossible. I was up late one night, trying to figure out another way. And then, at 3 AM, laying in bed, an extremely simple solution popped into my head. And it worked. Now, even if someone knows about darkfolio, and that it enables decoys, they can't be sure the app is displaying a decoy without significant resources.
