India was among the first few countries in the world to recognise Palestine as a state in November, 1988. At the time, and in fact, all along the valiant struggle of the Palestinian people, we showed the world the way by standing for what was right and upholding the values of humanity and justice on the international stage. Australia, Canada and the UK have only just followed suit, 37 years too late. And here we are now…our policy towards Palestine in the last twenty months has been nothing less than shameful and devoid of moral rectitude. It’s a sad diminishment of a previously courageous stand.

भारत में, पूजा स्थल (विशेष प्रावधान) अधिनियम, 1991 के तहत, 15 अगस्त 1947 को अस्तित्व में आए किसी भी धार्मिक स्थल का स्वरूप नहीं बदला जा सकता। इसके बावजूद, उत्तर प्रदेश के जिला संभल में चल रहे सर्वे के दौरान हुए पथराव और उसके बाद पुलिस फायरिंग में तीन लोगों की मृत्यु और अन्य के गंभीर रूप से घायल होने की घटना अत्यंत दुखद, निंदनीय और अस्वीकार्य है। यह घटना न केवल प्रशासनिक लापरवाही और स्थानीय खुफिया इकाई (LIU) की विफलता को उजागर करती है, बल्कि मानवीय मूल्यों और संवेदनाओं की घोर उपेक्षा का भी प्रतीक है। शोकाकुल परिवारों के प्रति मेरी गहरी संवेदनाएं हैं। इस दुखद घड़ी में हम सब उनके साथ खड़े हैं। पुलिस द्वारा इस घटना को "हल्का बल प्रयोग" कहना न केवल असंवेदनशीलता है, बल्कि पीड़ित परिवारों के घावों पर नमक छिड़कने जैसा है। मौजूदा सरकार के रुख को देखते हुए इस घटनाक्रम में नफरती तत्वों की साजिश से इनकार नहीं किया जा सकता। इसलिए इस घटना की न्यायिक जांच कराकर ऐसी परिस्थितियां पैदा करने वाले वास्तविक आरोपियों पर कार्रवाई सुनिश्चित करना अनिवार्य है, ताकि भविष्य में इस तरह की घटनाओं से बचा जा सके।

What a regressive piece of writing. What sanctity does the institution of marriage have if the husband needs to coerce his wife into having sexual relations with him? For all the “India is developing rapidly” rhetoric, we can’t even provide a semblance of equality to women.

Centre opposes pleas in #SupremeCourt to criminalise marital rape. Centre says in an institution of marriage, there exists a continuing expectation by a spouse to have reasonable sexual access. Hence, marriage is to be treated differently from other situations. Centre asserts that marriage does not obliterate the concept of women’s consent but punishing husband for rape is not the appropriate remedy. Centre says there are other legal remedies and tells Court that it is not for the judiciary to take away the marital rape exception.
