@thepaulleslie @MattStopa @eveningmagic @megbasham I understand your position, but language also evolves through common usage and context. Nobody hears “Billy Joel is prolific” and thinks it ONLY means “he released a lot of albums.” They understand it to mean an extraordinary body of meaningful work with lasting impact.

With all due respect, David. Words have meanings. “I don’t like his paintings, but he’s certainly prolific.” That statement makes sense. Why? Because of the definition of the word “prolific.” So, I suppose if you want to make up your own definition of words? You can. It’s not a crime. 😉

If you define prolific as sheer quantity than sure. Old saying, Quantity doesn’t mean quality. But again, my opinion and I bet others too. He created an extraordinary number of timeless, culturally defining songs. He sustained elite songwriting quality across multiple decades. ( timeless music where my college age kids enjoy ) He consistently wrote his own music rather than relying on outside writers. He built an incredibly deep catalog with remarkably little filler. A lot of artists with 30–40 albums don’t have as many universally known songs as Billy Joel. And what’s crazy. Last studio album was The guy continued to sell out stadiums until he got ill last year and his last studio album was 1993. Yep, that’s prolific in my book

IMO he was absolutely prolific, especially from the early 1970s through the early 1990s. What makes him stand out isn’t just the number of songs, but that he wrote the all of his own material. Every song he wrote the music first than lyrics. The one exception was we didn’t start the fire where he wrote lyrics first. Billy Joel created multiple iconic albums across different styles. He produced a huge catalog of recognizable hits and he told stories through songwriting in a way very few artists could consistently How is that not prolific ?

@thepaulleslie @megbasham I would say Billy Joel is in the same company of those great artists. if there was a painting of songwriters around a table shooting the shit with all the ones you mentioned and Billy Joel. It would make sense

@davehonig @megbasham One of the most successful in terms of album sales? Yes. One of the most prolific? Not even close when compared to Bob Dylan, Dolly Parton, Irving Berlin, Diane Warren, Smokey Robinson, Prince, Woody Guthrie, etc.

Billy Joel is one of the most prolific songwriters of all time. How in God’s name did The New York Times miss this? At first glance I was scanning the list thinking, “Okay… where’s Billy Joel? He has to be top 5.” This list is beyond questionable. Clearly they never watched the Billy Joel documentary or took the time to understand what makes him such a musical and songwriting genius. His entire catalog tells stories. Every album feels personal, cinematic, timeless, and uniquely American. From “Piano Man” to “Scenes from an Italian Restaurant” to “Vienna” to “New York State of Mind” you can go on and on and it’s deep, the depth, range, and longevity are insane. Huge fail.

What album or two do you have in deep rotation at the moment? It could be from the archives or it could be a brand new selection.

@stoolpresidente @NjTank99 He is the best and a perfect representation for us disappointed Mets fans. I truly just hope @NjTank99 tones it down for his health sake. I know the @Mets are his life, but they aren’t worth having a coronary over.

I can’t get enough of @NjTank99 in the wild videos. I know it’s been said but the Mets should charge extra for tickets in Frank’s section. It’s like getting to watch Picasso paint #frankwasright

@MikeLupica To add insult to injury, Nimmo is starting the season strong for Rangers, and Lindor is starting season looking lost. Good news for @Mets , it’s early. In reality, I hope for the best, but prepared for the worst. Why should this year be any different than the others ?
