If you read the Guardian three years ago, you would have learnt from Britain's most famous rail historian that driverless cars on public roads would never work. If you read the FT yesterday, you would learn that Addison Lee believe that it will work so well that they will quickly kill the existing cab trade unless punitive regulation is introduced.

@WilliamXnote @NinaDSchick AI IP certainly exists in London. Deepmind and others. Whether the UK economy can capitalise on it is another Q.

The opposite. It’s powered up by multi-Gigawatt intelligence Factories in the US. There is a site quite near to where I live in Texas that is meant to expand to 5 GW. Compare that the U.K. where the whole national grid can support ~45GW at peak demand. Your ChatGPT query is being subsidised and run by American hyperscalers. Not a power station in Yorkshire. And therein lies the problem (for the UK at least.)
Logan@LoganM_Stuart

@worstall @NinaDSchick She thinks when we use ChatGPT in London it’s fired up by a power station in Yorkshire 🤣

@nuejaebs I really don't think that's related but would love to see evidence. Coverage/bandwidth in NYC or any other dense US city is anecdotally better than London (although pricier). What's the evidence it is because Huawei rather than planning/backhaul capacity investment/spectrum etc?

Three of Ireland's 14 MEPs voted against a country fighting for its very existence against the continent's expansionist, imperial aggressor. They are all in the parliament's hard-left/communist grouping and join 137 others mostly from the political extremes. Shows, yet again, that Ireland's extremism problem comes more from the far-left than the mercifully insignificant far-right.

@davehrdng @JeanieF95 @danobrien20 @grok No. Im saying that the EU was buying Russian oil the whole time they were funding the Ukraine war. At the same time as sanctioning them We've given €193bn to Ukraine and well over €100bn to Russia

@JoeTracey55827 @JeanieF95 @danobrien20 @grok You're saying Finland and Sweden were paid to join NATO? Sweden? The significant arms exporter Sweden? Where do you think the stock of Irish Defence Forces anti-tank weapons that Ireland is sitting on are made?

@JeanieF95 @danobrien20 @grok NATO gets it through spending our money. They financed both sides of the war and killed millions It was the same in Gaza. They chose to recognise Gaza as the peace talks were making good progress. Just so they could get the muslim vote in their elections Its shameful behaviour

@DraperOr @AndrewOrlowski Can you provide any evidence of that? How do all those large buildings air con work around the world? Lucky for the grid that UK electricity demand has fallen over last 20yrs by ~25%

@davehrdng @AndrewOrlowski They work reasonably well in small areas. Insanely expensive, ugly and loud for large houses. And they never get close to the output from a gas boiler. Lastly, they impose insane costs on the grid.

@julesw1lko @olvrlstr @OzKaterji Every other party has supported SOME infrastructure projects. The Greens are WORSE than the others in this regard. Unless you can come up with an example of something they have supported?

@davehrdng @olvrlstr @OzKaterji Name a party that hasn’t? My local Lib Dems are *awful*. The Tom moans that he can’t buy a house, has to pay mega rent, blocks all home building. Lisa campaigns against fibre optics. Lib Dem council wants to build 800 homes a year in a square mile for 20 years.

@julesw1lko @olvrlstr @OzKaterji The point is the Greens object to EVERYTHING. Name a single infrastructure project the green party has EVER supported built or not built. My local green councillors voted against a solar farm because it was 'too big'

@ZackPolanski Why do you get so many details wrong? The warheads are UK designed and made in Aldermaston. It is the missiles that are from a shared pool and maintained in the US. Details matter - quite a difference between a nuclear warhead and an SLBM without one.

This headline leaves out the key points: Closer alliances with Europe. We are becoming the weak link against Donald Trump. A defence strategy not dependent on the USA. And ending the billions wasted on Trident - which doesn't work & leases the warheads from...the USA.
Kiran Stacey@kiranstacey

EXC: Zack Polanski tells us Britain should consider closing US military bases, leave Nato and denuclearise, as he begins to flesh out the Greens’ foreign policy. Also spells out to @PippaCrerar and me his red lines in any coalition talks to come. theguardian.com/politics/2026/…

The person who first downloaded the OBR's document at 11:35 on Budget day (I'm guessing someone at Reuters, given they first reported it) had already guessed the web address and tried and failed to download it 32 times so far that day(!)

Paul B | 💚💙 Overhaul UK's democratic system
They're for solar farms just not on prime agricultural land and when in place can still be used for farming. A mass national renewal of the existing housing stock with insulation, solar and wind. These measures will bring down bills for everyone. They won't line the pockets of a few energy firms. They'll enable a more resilient energy supply. They'll also invest in new council houses rather than the occasional "affordable" homes being built now. They'll put in the necessary investment for the NHS, transport, schools. But not white elephants like HS2. Maybe not your priorities, Dave. But certainly far better choices for the majority and UK nature than the ones you've mentioned.

Right-wing economists are saying @ZackPolanski is economically illiterate. Wait till they hear about JM Keynes. His concept of the economic multiplier has been well understood since the 1930s (except by right-wing commentators, who tend to prefer austerity & unfunded tax cuts).
