I wish there were a way to filter out variations of "AI is the same as humans" in my conversations. It really drags informed discussion down. If you find it hard to understand that protein is different than silicon, go look up "homo sapiens", then "computer". You can do it!

@salcalleros The AI portion of the WGA-AMPTP fight is going to be looked back years from now as the first meaningful attempt by a labor force to challenge the implications of paradigm-shifting automation. Since this Generative AI explosion, this is the first fight. We are the FRONTLINE. #wga

This is an important development. Under the current paradigm of data use, generative AI allows firms to use workers' past efforts against them. IMO, this is bad for a number of reasons. A small upside: it's conceptually "twisted", in a way that may galvanize public opinion.

The standoff has made it clear that, at the very least, studios plan to use AI as leverage against writers

It's incredible that FAccT right now is having a Discourse moment instead of, say, remarking at the incredible fight that the Writers Guild of America is putting up, with generative AI at the center of it. >>

I don't have a hardline stance against all generative AI, but I think the Writers Guild of America strike really highlights a serious issue with the way generative AI is deployed and regulated right now. If studios use generative AI to "write" during the strike... 🧵[1/9]

The clarity and self-awareness of the WGA strikers is so inspiring. The demand for control over whether and (if at all) how "AI" is used is so important and powerful. I've brought up repeatedly in the last days in response to the question, "but how do we govern tech?"
Akilah Hughes@AkilahObviously

Not to be hyperbolic, but this WGA strike is the canary in the coal mine. If we don’t stop this industry from insane automation and devaluing wages that’s a wrap. That’s dystopia.
