OMG IT WORKS!! 🥳 Selfbootable #PS1 CD-R! No modchip! That's a huge progress since last time but there are big reliability issues and I'm not sure that this can be fixed using my method. Increase the sound to hear the PS1 struggling to read the disc. More details below.

@DeVlLT Hey, well, it's not live yet, I will put the link in my profile once this is ready. I still have stuff to write and other things to do right now but it's getting there.

@_ramapcsx2 @EliasDaler This happened to me too when I used WD40, it worked a bit then it somewhat evaporated so I applied even more WD40 (like flooded xD) and that was worse. But on the other motors, I put a few drops at the back and front with the classic 3 in 1 light oil and this works well since.

@david4599_hex @EliasDaler It's just <very risky> :p I've tried this on perhaps 4-5 bad motors, and typically, it instantly fixes the problem for a few minutes. If it then manages to stay that way the next day, the fix worked. In my experience though, it's then back to bad and worse even.

Btw, CD as a medium kinda sucks on PS1... * A lot of PS1 lasers are faulty and don't work well. * CD-R is much worse than CD-ROM in terms of quality/ease of seeking/reading for PS1. * PS1 is designed for 71 min/620 MB CD's - finding those today is almost impossible.
Elias Daler@EliasDaler

A historic moment... I bought a CD burner and now my game launches from the CD on a real PS1! I don't have a modchip, so I'm loading it using Unirom, also it takes a while for the CD drive to spin up... so skip to 00:41 if you just want to see the gameplay.

@_ramapcsx2 @EliasDaler Well, my experience with these motors is that a few drops of light oil as shown in the youtube video (without removing the spindle hub to avoid breaking it) really seems to do the job. This works great since these last months at least, no idea in the long term.

@david4599_hex @EliasDaler Definitely, yea. Bad spindle can be heard: It's loud, especially at rampup or slowdown, and the rampup/slowdown take a long time. I have no good fix for this, other than 2 things: - WD40 etc has a 80/20 chance of killing it. - Continued normal use can "unstuck" it after a while.

@_ramapcsx2 @EliasDaler IIRC from these 3 drives, one produce a weaker RF, 100 - 200mVpp less than normal (maybe slight rails wear or weak laser diode) and the two others are fine even though the RF is weaker too but that's the motherboard, probably bad caps because the RF is good, 1Vpp on another board

@_ramapcsx2 @EliasDaler Yep, I'm aware about the rails wearing (especially on the all plastic versions) but I just feel like the motors are a more common issue than we think. I mean, 3 of my 6 PS1s had that problem (+ 1 or 2 other original drives I bought).

@_ramapcsx2 @EliasDaler If this works better by tilting the console 45° forward or backward, then the culprit is probably the spindle motor like it is here:

@_ramapcsx2 @EliasDaler Before messing with the laser power though 👇 (bad spindle lubrication was one of the issue for some of my drives that didn't properly read CD-Rs, and at the same time, that also allowed better reading of the lead-in beginning for my current project ^^) x.com/david4599_hex/…

@EliasDaler @Tankerbot I didn't test many brands but the CMC Pro (Taiyo Yuden) produce a stronger RF signal on the oscilloscope than these verbatims. Also, by hearing the rattling noise and the lens badly clicking, the drive needs lubrication, especially the spindle motor: youtube.com/watch?v=cnNTnl…

@EliasDaler @Tankerbot Modern drives can burn these CMC Pro at high speeds btw. I'm burning them at 16x and I didn't see any FMV skipping. This clearly happens at 4x though (way less RF jitter on the scope at high speeds)

@DeVlLT Not the 700x, but most 750x, every 900x and every PSone 10x (PU-22, PU-23 and PM-41 boards to be precise). Basically, they have tighter tolerances and my wobble patterns must be less spaced but this disturbs the lens too much and I couldn't find a good compromise.

@DeVlLT Yep it's definitely better with new tricks I found recently even though there are still downsides like the late PS1 models not supported. Right now, I'm documenting the project in a small blog I'm building and unless I become busy, it should be released in a few weeks I hope.

I’ve completed the PSNee PCB for the PSone (PS1 Slim), easy to install and compatible with both NTSC and PAL versions. Everything is programmed on the latest generation ATtiny426. If you're interested: ebay.it/itm/3265136055…

@TICS_Game Thanks! Yep it has plenty of features, it pretty much connects to every part of a burner, laser and optical pickup servo stuff, audio, ATAPI/IDE, RAM, and is controlled via its parallel uC interface.

@czajnick @TICS_Game Trying to "replicate" the PS1 copy protection on CD-R to play copies/homebrews on unmodified consoles. You can check my old pinned tweet. There is still a lot of stuff to do but it's going well even if there are limitations with my method.

Too lazy to push the reset button every time I wanted to upload another program so I added a software reset feature (triggered from the computer) to the new PS1USB development cart :D

Firmware update v1.2 for the #PS1USB development cartridge, this adds a new software reset feature contributed by @david4599_hex If you are interested in this #Playstation1 dev cart, send me an email, Download update here orionsoft.games/retroshop/ps1u… #psxdev

@DeviousMalcon_t The reliability is pretty good now, but there are limitations. This doesn't work for every PS1 and the burner's firmware I'm modding has a better control natively on the laser than most burners but it is rare and quite expensive. I hope workarounds can be found in the future.

@DeviousMalcon_t Yeah, it's not easy to understand the scale of this wobble, we can find drawings but the amplitude is exaggerated. At this size, a laser is the only solution to me. This is what they actually use in factories to create the tracks on the glass masters.
