This morning, Israeli Army temporarily detained a Spanish soldier serving with UNIFIL. The Spanish soldier was part of a UN convoy attempting to deliver supplies (food & other resources) to an Indonesian contingent (which recently suffered three casualties in Israeli attacks). Israeli forces blocked the convoy & held the Spanish soldier for less than an hour. He was finally released following direct intervention by UNIFIL command & strong protests from the Spanish Minister of Defense, who described the incident as “absolutely unacceptable.” Today, Israeli forces also attacked an Italian UNIFIL contingent, and given their decision to intensify their offensive against Lebanon, it cannot be ruled out that more UNIFIL soldiers will be killed, including Spanish soldiers. It is worth noting that since 2006, Israel has attacked Spanish contingents at least 50 times, resulting in the death of one Spanish soldier from a direct attack. Hezbollah zero.
