A pleasure to welcome Council of Europe Secretary General @alain_berset to the UK today. For over 75 years, the CoE has been a cornerstone of human rights, democracy and the rule of law, and remains a vital force in holding Russia accountable for its aggression against Ukraine.

33 years on, I still remember hearing about Stephen Lawrence - a young man who looked like me, with dreams and a life ahead, killed in a racist attack. His family’s fight for justice still inspires. We honour his legacy by continuing the work to build a society free from racism

In November I brought in tough measures to tackle releases in error and keep the public safe.  Today I am announcing up to £82 million in funding to drive down these errors - rolling out biometrics for every prisoner and digitising the archaic paper processes we inherited.  This government is committed to keeping the public safe after years of chaos.

Today we remember the 97 men, women and children who tragically lost their lives 37 years ago during the Hillsborough disaster. Thinking today of their families and loved ones, whose strength, dignity and resilience through such profound loss continues to inspire.

On Yom HaShoah, we remember the six million Jews who were killed, and we acknowledge the deep grief and anguish that remembrance brings for Jewish communities today. I know this comes at a time of profound anxiety. Conflicts overseas, pressures at home, and uncertainty about the future weigh heavily – compounded by a troubling rise in antisemitic attacks and terrorist plots targeting Jewish communities across the country. My government will always act decisively to protect Jewish communities and to stamp out antisemitism wherever it appears. We will not hesitate, and we will not look away. Remembrance must come with responsibility – to honour the past, to protect the present, and to ensure that ‘never again’ is not just a promise, but a duty we uphold.

Great to catch up with my friend @JDVance today in DC following his talks in Pakistan. It is vital that the ceasefire continues and we get shipping flowing freely again through the Straits of Hormuz. We continue to work together towards a just and lasting peace in Ukraine.

I recently visited HMP Liverpool and spent time with some of the men involved in the Samaritans’ Listener scheme, where they are trained to support others through some of their darkest moments. Hearing their stories, it was clear how powerful it is when someone simply takes the time to listen. And for many, it’s something they’ve rarely had. Having positive male role models like these in our prisons really matters. Programmes like this don’t just support mental health, they build connection, purpose, and give men skills they can carry with them beyond prison. I truly believe in creating more opportunities like this, so men can support each other, grow, and find a different path. Because when we invest in support, skills, and second chances, real change is possible.

He is risen! Easter has arrived and at this time we're reminded of a truth at the heart of faith, that hope endures, renewal is possible, and new life can emerge even from our most sombre moments. Wishing all Christians celebrating across the globe a very peaceful Easter.

Good Friday is a day of reflection, as Christians remember Christ’s sacrifice – and the values of compassion and hope that are at the heart of Easter. I wish Christians everywhere a peaceful day.

These utterly appalling comments show a complete lack of humanity and total disdain for the 72 who lost their lives in the Grenfell Tower fire. They have no place in British politics. Good riddance.
