@WalkableDFW US-131 also follows the main railroad tracks in the city. There was once a plan to build a grand train station where Van Andel Arena now sits.

I find the comments calling for the permanent removal of the damaged stretch of the I-10 incredibly dumb Should it have been built in the first place 75 years ago? No But if you're going to call for radical change, you need to understand the practical implications of that change. Of the five freeway segments encircling DTLA, the E-W I-10 segment is the one where removal would cause the most harm and do the least good Removal would flood Downtown and South East LA surface streets with car traffic, increasing smog and danger to pedestrians It would add a half-hour-to-an-hour of additional commuting time for thousands of people. And they can't just take public transit instead. A public transit commute from the Inland Empire to West LA might be triple the time of a driving commute. And the benefits would be relatively minimal: Most of that stretch of I-10 goes through industrial neighborhoods. The 110 and 101 are also crucial infrastructure, but maybe an argument could be made that their removal would be worth it to reconnect Chinatown and Westlake to DTLA BTW, I absolutely support removing one of if not both of the highways that bisect Boyle Heights. I get how the damage could look like an opportunity to kickstart change And I’m just as frustrated that the same urgency wasn’t given to fixing the Amtrak tracks But policy proposals should be based on common sense and providing real benefit, not on blind ideology. Now, let's focus on expanding and improving Metro and MetroLink so that in 50 years, this is a different conversation

@CohenSite I-10 from downtown to Santa Monica combined with the 60 headed east would be a major freeway to boulevard/BRT opportunity.

Why aren't young people having kids? Because not only are housing+education costs too high, but they believe they have to uproot their entire life if/when they have children We need to make it easier to have little kids in the city (because that's where young people live)

@pushtheneedle Or the stadium itself provides the grills and outdoor furniture. Fans just wheel in their coolers before the game.

tailgating proves people crave bars, restaurants and shopping land uses next to stadiums, we just don’t meet the demand in planning

@allynwest There are probably other reasons for the store closure. Not everything is planning/land use. The Whole Foods brand seems to be losing its luster, and grocery store profit margins are narrow to begin with. Houston also has a saturation of the brand (San Diego has just two).

@ob_cycler San Diego's zoning code, as a whole, encourages what you are asking for. It concentrates development near transit. There could be some minor changes to allow different types of missing middle housing in neighborhoods, but there's no reason to scrap the system.

@davidalanwelch flip that we are in a climate crisis bc everyone drives into the city from sprawling suburbs bc we don't have enough dense housing near downtown

The City is literally lighting money on fire with stupid “upgrades” to roads like this. There was literally no problem w this intersection at Greystone and Valburn and now it’s an obstacle course. @ALTERforATX

@JATompkins Less than an hour is really good. The improvements may attract people from Michigan that want to avoid the traffic.

Don’t sleep on Michigan City, IN. Investment in a new downtown train station and commuter-rail improvements will soon make the trip to/from Chicago under an hour. Several mid rise towers are already planned or proposed within the downtown transit district.

@acbowen I would love to see a big mixed-use, office-heavy development anchoring the north end. North County meets Northern Virginia.

“The neighborhood is crawling with kids and dog walkers. It’s just a matter of time until someone is killed, but maybe we can prevent that.” We have thousands of ‘dangerous by design’ intersections. It shouldn’t take a death to change them. bostonglobe.com/2023/09/11/opi…

“This apartment building should not be built because it will cast shade on a park” is one of my favorite NIMBY talking points because it’s so demonstrably out of touch: park users actually prefer shade and very few of them want to be in the blazing sun.

@seandsweeney Farmland on the fringe becomes subdivisions, roads get expanded for increased traffic, and the core city deteriorates. Same old growth (or no growth) pattern in the Midwest.

A terrible ruling for housing and the built environment in Minneapolis. Infill development will slow and rents will go up significantly if this ruling stands. Get ready for more suburban sprawl. Far, far worse for the environment.

These new land bridges at Houston’s Memorial Park 🤩 Part of a ten-year $155M improvement plan. Made possible by a public-private partnership and Houston’s generous philanthropists. $70M from @KinderFound, $40M from other donors, $15M from @MemorialPark, $30M public funding through @UptownHouston Development Authority.

@ebwhamilton Some of the blocks that applied were originally developed with one house on two lots. Since the legal lots still existed, they would end up with an established lot size of 2,500 sq. ft. instead of 5,000. The incentive to apply? The lots are restricted to single-family.
