@ctcartoonist @Dr_BigMac @shaTIRED This is not perfectionism. A perfect autopilot doesn't exist. Neither does a perfect paper. Perfectionism is refusing to let something be good enough. Medicine is dangerous. So is flying. At some point, the risks have to be acceptable, or else we simply can't do those things.

@Dr_BigMac @shaTIRED It's science-and-engineering culture. Recognition that reality works according to certain rules, and that if you get these wrong, your manipulations will not have the desired effect. You wouldn't fly in a plane whose autopilot was fed bad data; you'd want perfectionism.

@McJesse Vito was gay. AJ had ADHD. And Tony saw a shrink. Did you watch the show?

If they made The Sopranos in today’s woke times, one of the mobsters would be gay, AJ would be diagnosed with ADHD, and Tony would be in therapy.

I've recently come to learn that "woke" means "has non-white and/or non-cishet people in it."

@waitbutwhy @lpfproject This statement is inaccurate. Supermassive black holes can have the density of water, or even of sea-level air. They can form almost by accident. Nothing intense at all.

You’d have to compress Earth to this size (9 mm) to form a black hole. You’d have to compress the sun to 3 km and the moon to 0.1 mm (width of a human hair) to turn them into black holes. For every black hole out there, something THAT intense has happened. Image: @lpfproject

Breaking News: In a 5-4 decision, the conservative judges on the Supreme Court reject the final death row appeal of a Nazarene minister convicted of teaching Christian Race Theory. Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson issues blistering dissent, calling it a “crucifixion.”

@RileyJohnGibbs Shifting schedules by an hour in winter vs summer is DST by a different name. Clock time is a construct but school isn't. Really we should move away from the obsession with synchronized schedules or at least the idea that someone else owns your morning.

What if kept Daylight Saving all year and started school an hour later in the winter months? Or start everything later? What if we kept Standard Time all year and started school an hour earlier in the spring or fall? Anyway clock time is a construct.

PS: Reminder that the day that is one month before the day that is one month after January 31st is not January 31st.

@MycVicious @carinaromano @ashtroid22 Have spent my career in aerospace, so I actually know something about this. The FA can make the passenger isolate/change seats, wear a mask, not talk, physically restrain them if safety is a concern. They can’t force them to take a medical test if the passenger refuses.

In all that “deadly, violent, chaos ” that necessitated an AR-15 for “self defense”… The only casualties in the Kenosha “unrest” were the people shot by Kyle Rittenhouse

@chops_bailey Given the options at performance reviews, technically firing you is the second-best thing they could do. Still, apparently a close second

I was stressing my performance review at work, but I just realized the worst thing they could do is fire me, so I'm not really worried. I mean, the second worst thing they could do is keep me employed here, and it's a pretty close second place.

One must be cautious using the word "annealing" in materials science because it has one meaning in metallurgy and another in machine learning, which are completely unrelated and both used frequently in materials science.
