@statsepi e.g we know a lot about mutagens present in tobacco smoke after the initial epi studies of lung cancer, and this has been relevant beyond lung cancer

@statsepi Whilst I wouldn't characterise it as 'getting lucky', lots of epidemiology stems from initial observations that we then try to explain. Ecological studies, migrant studies etc leading to knowledge of possibly broad relevance.

@dan_p_simpson Congrats! Melbourne is a great place to be but Monash are lucky to have you all the same. If you need Melbourne tips that are at least eight years out of date, I'm your man

We have *several* lectureship positions (jobs.ac.uk/job/CBM277/lec…) in our department -closing date: 18 October! We may have questionable taste in appointing our heads (...), but we do have an entertainment committee (+we do great research and are a very nice place to work!)

I have *never* come across a data analysis where I thought a test for normality would be a useful thing to do

One way this could work is if a left-wing comedian adopted the persona of a right-wing comedian and the leftish audience could appreciate the satire while the rightish audience could take it at face value.

@ProfDFrancis IQR hsTnT concentrations suggest at least 75% >3, which is incompatible with the 'proportion detectable' row. I'm guessing that they report the median and IQR of values within the limits of detection.

Prof Darrel Francis ☺ Mk CardioFellows Great Again
Prize for the first person to spot what went wrong here. (First author is an old friend so I am sure she won't mind me pointing it out. Great study! All publicity is good publicity Valentina!)

Commonly the most interesting pieces of information in a simulation study into a new method: when does it break down? Every method breaks down at some point. EVERY METHOD
Maryclare Griffin@mcmcgriffin

Got a desk rejection and a major criticism was that that our method performed less well for a subset of the parameter values we considered in simulations. Feeling disillusioned - penalizing authors for being honest about when their methods struggle seems bad for science.
