Reminder: there's no gas to be fracked in Britain or the rest of Europe, and there's no oil or gas left in the North Sea. That's why we cannot give licenses to companies looking for reserves there and have to tax their profits at 78%.

@jonathan_wilke @nextjs I saw this in previous versions too - the Mac ground to half because of multiple spawned node processes thanks to Next automated tests… just upgraded so hope it’s not worse!

Holy crap... with the @nextjs 16.2 update the next server is now using 10GB+ of memory and my MacBooks fan is running constantly (before it never even turned on). What's going on here...

@CatherineBolla8 @joannaccherry People need a long hard think before they vote for these idiots. It’s a cult more than a party but thanks to that cult behaviour there is no credible alternative nationalist vote. Alba just fed that nonsense and the Greens are student politics with a salary.

For anyone who’s not worked out what’s going yet. The Scottish Govt are using the anonymity order protecting the complainers in the Salmond case (not victims because he was acquitted) as an excuse to avoid their obligation to disclose damning information. heraldscotland.com/news/25937749.…

@jamiekborthwick Lovely chap. I went to check my mail on my last day at STV (a Saturday for some reason) and there was a note from John that morning, apologising for not coming over to say cheerio that week. Said it all.

@GergelyOrosz And the bell 🔔 tolls for Chime. Oh thank god. Amazonians all hated it privately. As did anyone on a call with Amazon. Lol. And yes, good Q. Why didn’t they vibe fix it?

As AI coding tools went mainstream, Amazon decided it’s not worth them supporting their Zoom clone, called Chime (that has paying customers!) And yet startups are assuming it’s worth rebuilding and supporting their own JIRA clones (with no paying customers) Who is mistaken?

@GergelyOrosz I started building some internal equivalent tooling to SaaS last year and quickly hit the “who’s going to maintain this” barrier; the answer is better SaaS rather than vibing it! I hope GenAI improves all software rather than blindly replacing it.

@youlum @jemmm85517813 The thing that always gets me (and I'm not saying it's happened in this thread btw) is how people that tend to complain about covid spend, were the ones who wanted even more of it back then. People have short memories.

@youlum @jemmm85517813 It came up in Parliamentary committees several times and was never anywhere near the 35-37 billion often quoted. The out-turn was more like 21-22 over the first couple of years. And most of it perfectly necessary where people just assume it was fraud or waste.

@FGrampia @RideoutTim @bilbo815 Genuine question, has tidal power ever been proved to work both safely and reliably at scale? Clearly it's a good idea but you'd think it would be a lot more prevalent by now. I've read before that our surrounding seas are far too volatile for any current solutions.

@RideoutTim @bilbo815 It is a brief period to reverse, but it is fully dependable unlike wind. I didn't suggest pump storage isn't useful for evening out renewable generation troughs, but the capacity is already more than sufficient to do that in a Scotland only context.

A much better and vastly cheaper solution is to have hydro pumped storage. With say 30 days stored then Scotland will have no problems. Hydro is also permanent as it will effectively last forever. Obviously there is a small downside as some glens will get flooded.

This crisis has shown us 3 truths 1. With the oil crisis in 1970s France made the decision to go substantially nuclear 2 Germany did almost the same but closed its nuclear and became dependent on Russian oil and gas 3. SNP opposition to having a baseload nuclear is foolhardy

@JohnStuartWilso @A_D_PHIL @AustinRSheridan @theSNP You're preaching to the converted here. Just don't underestimate how our systems can produce bad and minority-favouring results. To a degree we got away with it in 2014 thanks to a high turnout of older people, it may not go that way again.

@daviddlow @A_D_PHIL @AustinRSheridan @theSNP We had a refendum on a binary question and the result was honoured. That has absolutely nothing to do with the SNP's ludicrous claims that if they get a 35% vote share on a 64% turnout they are empowered to change the constitution.

In this election @theSNP are in touching distance of a majority. To achieve this, as well as all dedicated activists across the country pounding the doorsteps everyday, the party also needs money for resources. Let’s dig deep and achieve a majority for independence. 💛🗳️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

When are tech folk going to get that people like wasting time, it's life. They don't optimize for efficiency, they try to get by, they watch dumb stuff, they enjoy shopping. Inefficiency is another work for living and life. Your m mean and median job isn't a software engineer in Menlo Park, it's Ashley in accounts in a not for profit in Columbus, it's Jesse , the office manager for a tool rental business in Tallahassee, they are more likely to use a Fax machine than Slack. They quite like meetings because they like chatting, they'll use AI to make a better invite to their baby shower, not agentify their job. These people, nor their bosses boss, aren't in a rush to build software as a side hustle, they are keen to use AI to check if their vet is overcharging them. They'd like AI to check spelling on the email to the school governor. They don't want agentic commerce, they want AI to be in the background and make living a little less stressful

@tomfgoodwin @LetMeChatGPThat The Internet (or really the web to be accurate) was to be more like fancy teletext when people first used it, than a commercial cesspit. Then the porn industry got involved.

@A_D_PHIL @JohnStuartWilso @AustinRSheridan @theSNP Politics doesn’t always work that way. We suffered Brexit via government with 37% on 66% turnout, then the referendum itself had 72% turnout so no absolute majority. Sadly that’s what the status quo is up against.

@jethrotsquirrel @AP We don't have elected leaders either. We have elected governments from which leaders emerge but you get no say in that. Most local elections have voting systems where you get who the party chose, not an individual.

@AP I find it bizarre to see the comments here, calling this the downfall of Britain. As if it is a good thing for people to have power based solely on the family they belong to. Personally, I prefer elected leaders.

@genevieve_holl @tweetsbyames Disingenuous clickbait. This is what's known as a "national day". An established diplomatic norm which occurs every week for most embassies. It is customary for representatives of host nations to attend foreign nations' national days. Crucially, this was *before* the war.
