Great day at Southerness. Course was fantastic again and the weather perfect for January. Sadly I should maybe not have played off the blue tees!!! Every hole a drive then a taxi!!! Haha But my opponent was outstanding. Nice 70 mmmmm Scratch of course.

Ricky Hendler is T9 in his first @DPWorldTour event. And know I say this a lot, but his story might be one of the wildest I know. (It’s a long one, so hang in there) Ricky had an offer for a full-ride scholarship to play D1…tennis. And he gave it up to play college golf. There was only one problem. Hendler had not touched a golf club since he was six years old. But he was determined. And because his family only had left-handed clubs, he played lefty, even tho he is right-handed. Also he didn’t tell his parents this plan until he showed up at home and told them he’d dropped out of college and wanted to play golf. Somehow they let him. So he took a year off of school and practiced golf endlessly. The next year he tried out for the Florida Atlantic golf team. (“I may have lied to the coach about some of my scores to get a tryout”) somehow Made the team. A semester later he was the number one man. His last two years there he was captain. He turned pro right after but didn’t have any money so he worked at a bar. Would work until 3am. Get up at 530 and play in an event at 730am. Did that for nearly two years. Not surprisingly, with that schedule, didn’t have much success. But there were a group of regulars that Hendler got to know. He told them his story and after some beverages one day the group agreed to fund a year for him in South Africa (Hendler parents are originally from SA). And so he packed his stuff and went. Played on the Safari Tour, the Big Easy Tour, Bushveld Tour. And he played like shit. “Probably avg 76 my first 10 months there”. Almost out of money Hendler met someone in SA that agreed to sponsor him. Still does now. And soon he was winning. Played 85 events in 15 months on mini-tours. Had a bunch of wins on these tiny tours. Eventually got his Sunshine Tour card via Q-school. And this year has played well enough on Sunshine to earn a start this week (it’s a co-sanctioned event). It’s his first DP start. Today in the 3rd round he shot 70, is -6 total and sits T9 Truly insane journey.
