@davidpentland3 I think I'll stick with them for now. 😉 Stick. Get it?

@AntoineVanner Loved your Dawlish book for that period. I was unaware of the war, until then.

In 1864 the small nation of #Denmark was attacked by two major powers, #Prussia and #Austria. The Danish defence was heroic on land & sea, and never more so than at the naval Battle of #Heligoland in the North Sea. Click: bit.ly/4edutaN #NavalHistory #MaritimeHistory

“It’s a difficult thing, planting, unless you know how to do it,” said Piglet.
“I do know,” said Pooh, because Christopher Robin gave me a mastershalum seed, and I planted it.”
“I thought they were called nasturtiums,” said Piglet timidly.
“No, not these.” ~A.A.Milne #GardeningX

@DrHelenFry The full story of the Dieppe operation.
The failure of the allied command to give priority to capturing Antwerp and its estuary.

@BWoostersauce @DrHelenFry Read the Bertie Gunther series by Phillip Kerr, it’s fiction, but based on a lot of very interesting facts. Paperclip is one of the less obscure ones.
English

@DrHelenFry I suppose the complicated aftermath. The secret exits of the Nazis, particularly those who got away. This has been researched and written about in the West (e.g. Operation Paperclip) but the growing Cold War conflict and what happened behind the Iron Curtain is less known.

@Bailey_RDB @DrHelenFry I had a teacher at school who was one of the first into Belsen, never talked about it either but you could see the effect on him still after all those years.

@AlanTaylor168 @militaryhistori I thought that, but on reflection I think it took a month to get assets in place, they weren’t ready a month ago.
English

@militaryhistori I think he’s a month late. Had he gone for it when the protests were at their peak it might have been different

Iran: Analysis: Surgical strikes have also hit and destroyed Iranian air defence and missile systems. Russia is too enfeebled to protect its ally. However, Iran is not Venezuela. Far more military effort will be required to subdue this potent adversary of over 600,000 square miles, housing a population of 90 million, and which has many covert allies across the Middle East. Any of them could mine the sea lanes paralysing the movement of oil tankers, swarm naval vessels with suicide drones, conduct sabotage, initiate vehicle bombs, and assassinations using sleeper cells. Iran was in conversation with China about acquiring powerful anti-ship missiles, but events have far overtaken this aspiration. The Straits of Hormuz, through which a quarter of the world’s oil passes, is already reported to have been closed. Shipping, insurance and oil prices may rise in the short term, as will gold, always a safe haven in times of tension.

We are proud and grateful to have 102-year-old Eugeniusz Jan Niedzielski, the last surviving soldier of Gen. Stanisław Maczek’s 1st Polish Armoured Division, living in London.
On 25 February 1942, Gen. Maczek began forming his division in Scotland—a force that would go on to make history in WWII. The division played a crucial role in the Allied victory, securing key successes in France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany.
Gen. Maczek and his soldiers never lost a single battle. They sealed the Falaise Pocket, liberated Breda and the POW camp in Oberlangen, and ended the war by capturing the Kriegsmarine naval base in Wilhelmshaven.

@militaryhistori I see they are having to update the ladybird book “100 things to do with a flamethrower in your own home!”

@PhilipKAllan Thanks ! Hadn’t heard about this engagement.

Fight of the Wagram by Auguste Mayer
Wagram was a French first rate built in 1810. The picture shows a clash between French ships and the British Mediterranean Fleet in 1813 during which she helped her out-numbered squadron escape.
