It is Canada’s largest church and one of the world’s largest shrines dedicated to Saint Joseph, the patron saint of Canada. The Oratory stands on the Westmount Summit of Mount Royal, making it the highest building in Montreal, with its dome rising over 30 meters above the mountain’s peak—a unique exception to Montreal’s building height restrictions.
Originally founded in 1904 by Brother André Bessette, a humble lay brother known as a miracle healer, the site began as a small chapel. Over time, it expanded into a massive basilica spanning six decades of construction, blending Renaissance Revival exterior with an Art Deco interior. The dome, modeled after Florence’s Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, is the largest church dome in Canada and the third largest in the world, measuring nearly 40 meters in diameter.
The Oratory attracts over 2 million visitors and pilgrims annually

Anyone who wants to make more than they take has my respect. That’s the main thing you should aim for: to make more than you take and be a net contributor to society.” He compares it to the pursuit of happiness: “If you want to create something valuable financially, you don’t pursue that. It’s best to pursue providing useful products and services. If you do that, money will come as a natural consequence of that rather than pursuing money directly. You can’t pursue happiness directly.
