30 years ago we were reaching peak beat 'em up saturation, as exemplified by Interplay's Clay Fighter, which featured "humorous" characters rendered from clay animated figures. Was reviewed very positively by US outlets; less so in Europe. Fun, but ultimately a bit of a novelty.

40 years ago, Jeff Minter was totally being Jeff Minter with Sheep in Space, a Defender clone with a ruminant twist. The game was fine, but this ad? Seriously cool stuff. Its super-eye-catching illustration and minimal text really stood out!

35 years ago, Ocean was advertising its upcoming conversions of The NewZealand Story coin-op, a terrific platformer that was as rock freakin' hard as it was cute. However! Why on Earth was the Amiga version £25 while the Speccy version was just £9. What an absolute con!

40 years ago, Konami's Hyper Sports was released. Like its prequel Track & Field, this sports game featured a mix of button-mashing and skill-oriented gameplay as players engaged in activities such as archery, triple jump, and pole vaulting. Absolutely loved this back in the day!

35 years ago, Anco began advertising its epic soccer game Kick Off. While today's discourse about the game is usually comparisons with Sensi Soccer, the reality is that regardless of which one you prefer, Kick Off (and Sensi) were brilliant, innovative, fast, and very, very fun.

35 years ago, ZZAP! reviewed US Gold's C64 conversion of one of the era's biggest coin-ops - Out Run. They didn't send it to us because they knew it wasn't great and didn't want our potentially negative comments to hurt its sales. We had to buy a copy and review it post-release.

35 years ago, Anco was making bank from its Strip Poker releases. These extremely rudimentary poker games had the player revealing hopefully poor bitmap images of women in various states of undress. Dreadful products, really, mostly enjoyed by sad old men or giggling schoolboys.
