Reading this makes me tremble. I remember my mother and I speaking in the kitchen of her apartment, and I saw news reports coming in. I thought, "Oh no, not again..." Worrying about my family there. But then I saw the pictures... I didn't even want to show my mother. How can I? But she insisted. And then she started asking about my sons. Are they safe? Where are they? They're teenagers, so who knows what they're getting up to at times. Everyone was okay, thankfully. But then the day unfolded... worse and worse... more and more horror. This wasn't just a small, isolated attack. This was something beyond recognition. I couldn't sleep that night, thinking of these pictures of people of all ages... the first ones I saw were of elderly people slumped over, victims. No, I thought, this isn't happening. The people trying to escape in their cars, the Nova festival kids running for their lives. And then people online mocking us. My G-d. What has the world come to? Where are you Hashem? But I knew in my heart... yes, Israel will survive this, even if it seems darker than hell itself. I remember when I first came to Israel as a young man, staying in a hostel in Jerusalem's Old City. Oh my, I thought, I have a whole big room to myself. I haven't showered in a few days. Take a shower, lay down, rest. No smartphone then. Just me, thinking, I have all of Jerusalem to explore, Shabbatons to attend, people to meet, study sessions galore. I fell asleep... for all of five minutes. Then, suddenly, a group of IDF soldiers exploded into my room, laughing and talking in Hebrew. My own Hebrew was broken... but I could still talk to them - in English and broken Hebrew. We stayed up half the night talking and sharing stories. I'll never forget it. And I saw, in that moment, what Israel's youthful fighting force had to offer. I remembered that night on October 7th in the darkest hours. We will prevail, B'ezrat Hashem. We will prevail.

A large part, though not all, of the engagement are from bot farms - state actors and otherwise. And whenever you have something like the current Iran conflict, you're going to find more engagement. Those are who looking for nothing more than likes, view, and click throughs, are going to play into whatever is generating them, in this case antisemitism. Those people, like Oliveira, are scum. He's an example of someone who could've used his skills for good, but instead is just a clickbait whore who has no morals to speak of. In terms of serving to recent third world immigrants, legal or otherwise, yeah - that, too, for sure. The online Jew haters would LOVE for everyone to think their numbers are massive, but if that were the case, why are famous podcasters and online personalities like Nick Fuentes pivoting now? Say what you want about Fuentes (and I could say a lot), but unlike many in the Jew hate space, he's not stupid. He knows the writing is on the wall, that most of the engagement is not translating into long term viewership because, well, many are bots, and he's making an informed decision. Not to say he's had a change of heart, I think he still harbors hate, but he's making a business decision - not a moral one.

The New York Times’ defense of Kristof’s column relies on process: interviews, corroboration, experts, fact-checking, and human-rights reporting. But the Times’ Caliphate scandal shows that process language alone does not guarantee accuracy. In that case, a widely discussed terrorism project built around a striking ISIS narrative later fell apart after the central source’s account could not be substantiated. The Times said that major episodes did not meet its standards and it later returned a Peabody. nytimes.com/2020/10/11/bus…

@Average_NY_Guy "... approach to storytelling aligned with a more profound shift underway at The Times. The paper is in the midst of an evolution from the stodgy paper of record into a juicy collection of great narratives, on the web and streaming services." -NYT 10/11/2020 Ben Smith

Geesh. Good find. "But the terror beat lends itself particularly well to the seductions of narrative journalism. Reporters looking for a terrifying yarn will find terrorist sources eager to help terrify. And journalists often find themselves relying on murderous and untrustworthy sources in situations where the facts are ambiguous. If you get something wrong, you probably won’t get a call from the ISIS press office seeking a correction."

New way of journalism at the NY Times: say something outrageous and false, grab everyone’s attention with it, then use that attention to push a completely different message you never could have sold on its own. Like: “Okay, maybe the story about Israeli dogs raping Palestinians was unsupported nonsense… but what about the 3,000 Palestinian prisoners without Red Cross access?”

I've really had to bite my tongue since that garbage was published, otherwise I'd be booted right off this site. That trash NY Times article is right on the heels of the The Civil Commission on Oct 7th Crimes by Hamas Against Women and Children report. Kristof and the Times are attempting to put Israel on the same moral plane as their barbarous enemies by using flat out lies. One of the most disgusting things I've seen the past two years, and that's saying something.

I read the most profound thing I think I've ever read about European support for "Palestine," and I don't think I'll be able to unsee it now. It's that by imagining Palestine to be real and the victim of Jewish colonialism and genocide, they can imagine Jews as the actual Nazis and thereby assuage themselves of their overwhelming guilt for the 20th century, not to mention a long and ugly history before. By finding a way to stain the Jews and Israel with those same moral evils they themselves feel the weight of, but for imaginary instead of genuine reasons, Europeans can not only remove but reverse the mark of the evil they inflicted on Jews over their entire history, not remotely least during the Holocaust. Thus, and only thus, can they forgive themselves for their unforgivable sins, but like everything Leftist, it's empty and inverted.

Oh boy. Kristof’s blood libel was a “deeply reported piece of opinion journalism.” So why are you calling it opinion journalism instead of just journalism? Where’s the opinion in that piece? To me, the whole thing screams opinion: “Israel is committing rape, using dogs, on poor Palestinians, aren’t they as evil as Hamas!?” To place Israel on the same moral plane as the evil, barbarous Hamas who committed the worst attack on Jewish people since the Holocaust is absolutely egregious. And the timing of this article is suspicious when the Silenced No More report on sexual violence on Oct. 7th was just released. (See here: civilc.org/silenced-no-mo…) So, how "deep" was this "deeply reported piece of opinion journalism" by Nicholas Kristof? Let's take a look, according to the @NYTimesPR: On-the-record accounts? There are mountains of on-the-record accounts after Oct. 7 in the following hours and days. But instead of focusing on that, everyone who hated Israel, including the failing New York Times, insisted that Israel was committing a pretendicide. Sorry, genocide. Corroboration where possible. Conversations with family members and lawyers, human rights reports (!!), surveys (!!), UN testimony (!!), experts (!!). And the biggest red flag of all, fact-checking. So even if you take the word of family members who said these people were abused in Israeli custody, I’m not ready to believe people who, at the same time, called their moms and dads and said, “Hey, mom, I’m killing Jews. Aren’t you proud of me?” Human rights reports. Meaning the same orgs that have accused, falsely and without evidence, of a pretendicide. I mean genocide in Gaza. No thanks! Surveys. Imagine being a person with a functioning brain and putting in surveys as your evidence. Wow! UN testimony. You mean the same UN that was teaching Gazan children to blow up Jews? Hmmmmm. (unwatch.org/un-teachers-ca…) As for experts and fact-checking... 🤣🤣 At the end of the day, if Israeli personnel committed crimes, expose them and prosecute them. It’s that simple. And Israel has a very good track record of doing exactly that! But then apply the same standard to Israeli victims. For more than two years, survivor testimony from Oct. 7 was dismissed, including by reporters at The New York Times. First-responder accounts were dismissed. Israeli evidence was dismissed. Hostage testimony was dismissed. Even after UN findings, perpetrator footage, forensic evidence, and now the Civil Commission’s massive report on Hamas sexual violence, the denial continues. This is the problem: evidentiary asymmetry. When Israel is accused, testimony plus corroboration plus NGO reports are treated as serious enough to publish some of the most lurid allegations imaginable. When Israelis are the victims, mountains of evidence are somehow still not enough. The standard can’t be: believe the victim unless the victim is Israeli. The New York Times cannot be taken seriously. And anyone who is Jewish ought to take a moment to reflect and consider whether they should continue to support an institution that has continued to decline for many, many years. It has treated coverage of Israel extremely unfairly. It has not covered the rise of antisemitism in this country (the United States) after Oct. 7 with the kind of serious reporting that a national institution as old and lauded as The New York Times ought to provide. And it has been wrong on so many other issues, thanks to poor journalistic practices.

Was waiting for the subway in Brooklyn when I spotted 4 college students standing nearby. So of course… I asked the question: “Are you guys Jewish?” To my surprise, every single one of them said yes. I asked if they wanted to wrap Tefillin. They smiled and said, “Sure.” I started wrapping one of them right there on the platform, and in the middle of it, the train pulled in. So we kept going. We walked onto the subway together, and one by one, each of them wrapped Tefillin while the train moved through Brooklyn. Somehow, we finished perfectly on time before they reached their stop. They were genuinely so happy. Thanking me for the mitzvah, smiling ear to ear. One was from New Jersey. One from New York. Two were from Boston. I asked them what brought them all the way out to Brooklyn. They gave the most classic Jewish answer imaginable: “Authentic chocolate babka.” Only in New York.
