My good sir, the human body as with every machine ever designed, breaks down doing 996 and in the long run a drain on economic performance. Where would the next generation of workforce come from if the current generation is doing 996?

With the Chinese work ethic and it's 996 weekly work culture can any country compete?? You are asking what 996 is right? They work 9am to 9pm 6 days a week!! I think we need to wake up, literally!!

@PriestRitchie Check the replies, that is the whole point of the post, getting us to think out of the box like you have just done. Someone spending 12 hours looking at a dead laptop because their is no power is not the solution. How do we fix this?

@dbrownAnalyst I don't respect the opinion of anyone that talks about the "low productivity" of Nigerians, and their solution is increasing work hours without talking about improving wages, workers rights, basic social amenities for the people, and the quality of living first.

@BelloYinka72 What we need is productivity, the message was meant to get us thinking about how we imrpove productivity to compete, we already mostly work crazy hours on multiple jobs as Nigerians but still struggle to make ends meet, why? And what can we do about it?

@itsYomi People outwork government failure all the time. it is just hard when we are starting from such a low base, poverty is a true demon. There are countries in pepetual war with better infrastrcuture, the question is why and what can we do about it.

@dbrownAnalyst You know fixing is needed yet you bring up 996 It’s like farming in the desert & wondering why the guy farming in the Amazon is more productive than you You can’t outwork govt failure even if you decide to go 24/7

This is so disingenuous and silly The average Nigerian works 2-3 jobs! But no, we should wake up Not for their anti-corruption, not anti-imperialist, not actual geo-political culture that actual matters but working 9am to 9pm 6 days a week Clown

@Avlinn_ Abuse won't help us improve, engagement, bringing data to an argument means spending time, reflecting and then providing cogent arguments to help everyone grow. Typing abuses is easy and lazy!

@habbizzelle Agreed 100%, read the comments. I expand on Power. Do you know we don't produce enough power per capita to power a laptop!! So even if we work 20 hours it will be hopelessly unproductive! How do we change this?

@dbrownAnalyst Overworking people is not the solution. We need stable power, infrastructure, education, technology, and fair wages, not burnout. We already work exhausting hours under poor conditions. Glorifying 996 just helps capitalists hoard more wealth while ordinary people suffer.

So we really need to wake up and work from 9 AM to 9 PM, six days a week? Sometimes, the main lesson from observing others is what to avoid. While some advocate for 4-day workweeks, others seem to support what could be seen as modern-day slavery. God forbid.

This sounds smart until you consider the myriad of other factors like how the 996 is considered unethical and counterproductive in the long run. Economic and structural factors in Nigeria that makes it near impossible to implement something like this and more.

@nikky_foster Correct. You can see that the average Nigerian actually does these hours but it is wasted andunproductive due to infrastructure deficits. We don't produce enough power per person to power a laptop, that is the issue needing addressing.

@dbrownAnalyst You can’t be talking about solutions when an average lagosian go to work 5:30am , starts work by 8:00am . Closing hour is 5pm but there is still such more to do and end up leaving work 9pm sometimes 10. Maybe we can start demanding good infrastructure first .

@BankoleMilola Precisely but in another way. Very low productivity as a result of huge infrastructure gaps. You don't need to work longer hours to be productive. But if you can't even charge your laptop because of zero power, how can you even work! We have huge problems to fix.

@TOPENREWAJU We have massive gas reserves too. Just uping our power consumption will significantly increase productivity. More than 70% of the tiny power we produce (14,000MW) doesn't get to us (only 4,500MW), we need 200,000! What gets to us is barely enough to charge a laptop.

@dbrownAnalyst I think we need to first develop a culture of knowing how to manage what we have and optimize them. We have sunlight and abundant rain, we have young population, we have resources etc.
