Freed hostages Eliya Cohen, Omer Wenkert and Omer Shem Tov take part in a havdala ceremony marking the end of Shabbat in the hospital after they were freed from 505 days in captivity.

Born in 1940, Oded Lifshitz was far more than just a resident of Kibbutz Nir Oz. He was a retired journalist, a dedicated peace activist, and a testament to human empathy. Along with his wife Yocheved, he was one of the founding members of Kibbutz Nir Oz, embodying the collaborative spirit of Israel's kibbutz movement. What set Oded apart was his extraordinary commitment to understanding and healing. He spoke fluent Arabic and had numerous friends in Gaza. More than just words, his activism was deeply practical. He and his wife regularly transported patients from Gaza to receive medical treatment, demonstrating a profound belief in human connection that transcended political boundaries. As a retired journalist, Lifshitz dedicated his life to advocating for peace and the recognition of Palestinian rights. He was known for his unclouded vision of potential coexistence, opposing settlements and working tirelessly to build understanding between communities that had long been divided. On October 7, 2023, this life of compassion was brutally interrupted. Oded was kidnapped from his home in Kibbutz Nir Oz, shot in the hand, and taken by Hamas terrorists. Despite the violence he experienced, his legacy remained one of hope and human connection. His daughter and family continued to share his story – not as a tale of victimhood, but as a powerful narrative of a man who believed in the possibility of peace, even in the most challenging circumstances. Oded Lifshitz was more than a hostage or a statistic. He was a living embodiment of the belief that understanding can triumph over conflict.

💥Ofri Bibas Levy, sister of Yarden Bibas: "The list that has already transformed Shiri, Ariel & Kfir into casualties, released by the @IsraeliPM ostensibly 'with the permission of the families' did not come for our approval. For 16 months we've been waiting for certainty that no one could give us and now it's been determined before they're even here?? Before they've been identified?? Before we are informed? An entire country has become casualty officers & is knocking on our door. It's a disgrace."
